Just got a utility HAK.

I have a question about the grip on the UHAKs. Is the area where you grip the knife and put your fingers through the same on all of the UHAKs?

Regarding utility --- FS did start out with the idea during her stint in the garden, after all, so calling it a "utility" knife isn't really all that much of a stretch ... I for one don't think of it as just a PC marketing move.

I too think the design on these are great and I plan on ordering one as soon as I figure out the sizing with the cord wrap ... I was planning on cord wrapping mine but taking off the paracord in the winter so I can use it with my gloves, but I haven't figured out the sizing for all this yet ....

No worries! I was just making the point that the blade shape is almost identical to the replacement blades most utility knives use. It is hard to beat the blade shape for utility.....OR self defence!!

RedEdge77 - The area where you insert your Index and Middle finger, varies from HAK to HAK depending upon the size of the user's fingers. On Frontsight's website there are directions on how to measure your fingers to get your "HAK size". When you order a HAK you must then enter the measurement so it will be made to fit your size.

Hope that is the answer you were looking for.

The area where your fingers go is refered to as the capsul. The capsuls on the UHAK's are all different sizes just like on the custom HAK's.

Frontsight really feels strongly in them fitting the owners hand! So even the UHAKs get a custom fit!!

I have four HAKs (2claws, a utility, a hybrid titanium) and only one approached my definition of sharp.
Maybe everyone has different perceptions of sharp? My minimum standard is that it cuts paper cleanly.
Anyone have any tips for sharpening titanium?

Milu, even the Beta Ti from Mission won't hold a shaving sharp edge.

The utility HAK seems to have been made of 440A and is now 440C, both of which should get pretty sharp. The customs are in S30V.

But a short sabre ground blade isn't going to get the same kind of sharp as a deep hollow grind. As a utility knife, my UHAK works fine, but it is more about the point than the edge as a self-defense knife.

I've managed a reasonable edge on the utility. One of the claws came sharp, the other needed a full sharpening job as far as I was concerned, it really is scary sharp now but not really a working edge. The Ti Hybrid is on my to-do list. I'm not too worried about edgeholding in this instance as long as it isn't too bad, but I'll probably compromise a little on how sharp.

Hello,

Yesterday I received my Utility Hideaway Knife, any my opinion generally mirrors the positive feedback of others.

One negative point, however, is the tip of the knife. The edge does not continue through the 45-degree taper of the top of the knife. (Sorry about the terminology.) Rather, it seems to be truncated, dropping straight down from the beginning of the grind.

As a result, I can jab my finger with the point pretty hard without even causing a prick. The edge will shave hair but the point seems kind of weak.

I just emailed Frontsight about this, but was curious if I had a bad unit or if this was an intentional aspect of the design.

Best,
Michael

This is probably a case of a good picture worth more than a few words. I can't visualize what you're describing. But the point of my utility HAK is needle-sharp, so it sounds like there is a problem with yours that needs fixing.

My custom HAK Curvy arrived shaving sharp. Of course, it's made of S30V and has a high hollow grind, so it is ideally designed to take a very fine edge.
