I just got back from the BLACKSMITHS Ashokan, They had Joe Szilaski as the featured presenter (actually the way they run their show is they have 1 featured presenter who does a 2 day show kinda different than ours) oh yes, almost veryone is in bunk by 11:00 (very odd, almost surreal, I couldn't do that so I stayed up and forged a blade Saturday night anyway)

Joe was an excellent presenter (although some of the blacksmiths didn't really seem to get it) and his carving work was incredible!

Joe introduced a 14 year old to blade forging and the young man forged out a little bird and trout knife from a rod of 52100 under Joe's careful teaching.
After the kid was done I gave him a bar of Aldo's 1084 and told him and his father about BladeForums (and told them about the info stickies). Hopefully they will show up here soon with questions and pictures of work in progress

I found out from Tim Neu when the next Bladesmith's Ashokan is so that those of us who schedule our weekends months in advance can make sure to reserve the time, it is in the Ashokan schedule as September 19-20-21

I now return you to your regularly scheduled forumation

You mean the pristine HayBudden 125 with perfectly square edges for $625? or the 3 other almost perfect ones on his trailer?

Oh and bythe way we went over to his shop on Saturday after Joe was done, and I got to play with his Kuhn air hammer. It was a virgin, me, Tom Ryan and 3 other guys had our way with it. :D

Yes those same CADILLAC anvils, I never can afford one but I always love to drool over them. When you were at his shop did yousee the rest of his collection? Did he get a new hammer or do you mean his little one he has had? How's his new shop look?!??!??!?? I heard it was finished and have wanted to get over for a visit very badly, Jonathan sold me my first forge.

Great, I'm glad you had a good time Page, and having Joe Szilaski as a presenter, well, sounds like the knife weekend at Ashokan

Thanks for the dates Page. I would have liked to get to that one. Joe is a great guy. He did my JS performance test. Hey I just saw you're from Syracuse. I'm in Windsor just east of Binghamton. Looks to be about half way between you and Sam. You guys want to get together here some weekend and hurt some steel?

No this is a big green monster that he just got.
he apparently had his eye on this one for about 5-10 years and just got it. It had never been used until when Tom fired it up (you should have seen how nervous Jonathan was :D Tom started out by heating up a piece of 2 inch square and forging it into a pointed taper) I forged a zweihander sword crossgaurd out of 3/4 and a couple other folks stepped up and did similar things. We definitely put the hammer through it's shakedown cruise, at one point we found out that it wasn't all that well bolted down, and Jonatahn was suddenly jumping at it with a wrench in his hand

I hope to make ashokan this year (for blades) and I almost garunteed will be making Ashokan this year for hte huge blacksmithing convention over memorial day weekend there, (New England blacksmiths, + NY + PA + MD + etc ) It's taking the place of the aborted ABANA conference.

I don't know if you've seen the fee structure for that (the ACBC event) yet, but you'll want to register early as the prices go up dramatically the closer you get to the event

LOL, i'll bet he was sweating the whole time with you brutes manhandling her :D . How was it? no doubt nice power and control I bet. I watched him break down some 2 3/4-ish round (O1 too) one time on his smaller hammer, was making a hardy cutter, very nice hammer.

I'm up for a couple sundays sure! Just let me know dates times and directions:D.

I'll be busy getting ready for a festival I sell at over memorial day weekend. After that, I've no solid plans on the weekends. I'm right off of Rt 17 exit 79 .
