Well I got home today and my wife surprised me with my new knife. A caly 3, g-10 handles, and vg-10 blade. Well in my hands if feels good, different but good. I've only had a mini grip for a while now, so it feels different. The knife feels really solid though, the blade feels good in the hands, and the g-10 is really nice. I really like the knife, my only complaint is it didnt come sharp enough. I was reading about one guy who got his and cut open a pack of water, it went through the plastic and three bottles of water.
Well mine isnt near that, it barely shaves hair, and only slices paper at the tip, the rest just tears. Im sure that some time on the sharpmaker, and the strop will make it hair whittling sharp though. I sure hope so.

should only take a short while on the sharpmaker, and you'll be ready to slice and dice everything in sight:)

The ergonomics on the Caly3 are perfect, IMO. Congrats, that's a great gift! The VG-10 should sharpen without trouble.

My Delica 4 didn't come very sharp. I kept trying to get it sharper on the sharpmaker and wondered why nothing was happening. Then I realized you need to clean the rods every once in a while!!!

My Caly 3 came scary sharp out of the box. It cleaves through thick pressboard. I shaved a bunch of hair off of my hand with zero effort. Can't argue with that.

Best thing is: cut up a ton of heavy duty pressboard (the non corrugated cardboard stuff) and it's still just as sharp.

Love the Caly 3 for normal day EDC and the Delica 4 for hard use EDC.

Has anyone else had their spyderco's come a little less sharp than you expected?

All of my PE Spyderco's came very sharp. Recently I was able to find NIB Experimental Micarta SE (the model, which became Calypso Jr.) at one of the Navy stores. The knife has couple of big hanging burrs along the edge, it was quite a surprise, but micarta looks nice.

Well that stinks, I know i've read about some benchmades not coming really sharp, and mine on the other hand came hair whittling sharp. So if one production company has it happen. I'm sure spyderco can have it happen.

Once you get a Sharpmaker, it stops mattering as much whether your knives are shaving sharp out of the box. As long as the stock angle of the edge is at or below 40 degrees inclusive you can make the knife shaving sharp in no time at all!

I've got a sharpmaker and love it. I was just shocked it wasnt sharper out of the box. Like I said im sure it just happens sometimes.
I just cant get hold of the ultra fine stones on the sharpmaker, every time I use them the knife actually comes off duller than when I finish with the fine stones.

My first Spyderco i got was a Military CPM D2 back in December '07. It also didnt come as sharp as i thought it would. A few free hand strokes on my DMT ultra fine diamond diafold got it hair poppin' scary sharp. I use the DMT diafold to give it a toothy edge because theres no serrations. I only use the sharpmaker ultra fine rods for edges that already have high polishes on my other blades. The only knife that came scary sharp out of the box was my Benchmade 710 D2.

My Caly was very sharp out of the box. I stropped it on my green strop and it was scary sharp. I too like the Caly for EDC but use the Endura for bigger stuff.

Well I started to sharpen the new caly on the sharpmaker and at 20 degrees it wouldnt touch the edge on the left side of the edge if your holding the blade edge down. So I started to rebevel it using my course diamond stone. Still the same problem so im still having to keep cutting it. Any body else ran in to this problem where they had to reprofile just to get it work on the sharpmaker??

It justs shocks me more with the spyderco cause I thought they were supposed to be ground from the factory to be used on the sharpmaker. Maybe not, maybe im just confused about that.

Well I have to say I really like this knife. The shape of the blade is really easy to sharpen. I still had to angle the knife a little on the left edge so I know when reprofiling I didnt truly get it all the way to 15 degrees on that side. But I kept going and went through the white stones and the knife cuts paper like nobodys business. The hair on my arm just pops off now.
I do have a question though, I remembered now on my benchmade mini grip the left angle is also more obtuse than the right one. Why do you guys think this happens??? Do these two companies hand sharpen their knives??

I gotta say dull spydercos from the factory are very much the exception rather than the rule. I have about half a dozen of them that I've bought over the years and every one came wayyyy sharper than my other factory knives, and about as sharp as I normally sharpen my users to.

Yeah dont get me wrong guys im not complaining at all about it coming dull. No ones perfect. I love this knife, it was a very good knife to spend my hundred bucks on, and Im very glad I did. So please dont think im complaining about the knife at all. I was just wondering if you guys knew why it is that the knives came with a more obtuse ngle on one side?? Is it because they're hand sharpened??
I know when im sharpening its easier for me to sharpen with my left hand than right hand because im left handed. And feel that I have better control over the knife with my left hand than right hand, and am just wondering if this may be the case with when these are being ground down the first time?? Just a question no accusations here. :)
