Just got fired

How far are you from the Red River Gorge in the Daniel Boone forest, Ky? They don't call it Red River Gorgeous for nothing.
Sorry to hear about your job btw, maybe it's a blessing in disguise.

Sorry to hear about your job, my buddy just got nailed by the same sort of situation.

On to the camping, you should check out the Pigeon River area of Michigan it is a very beautiful place. It is a state forest IIRC, my forestry program did our field studies there. There is morel mushrooms, amazing fishing, hiking and backpacking. It is a great place and is right outside Gaylord MI. It is a wonderful place that I love to visit. Good luck and I hope you find your escape.

Consider this a new beginning. What you describe is a toxic workplace. It's not worth stayin at a place like that. Time to move on to something better.

I cant contribute much to your question but would just like to say that I hope it all gets sorted out and you find a job quickly. Hope your mind gets cleared with the trip.

In Ohio, Miami Whitewater Forest seems to be really great. http://www.greatparks.org/parks/miamiwhitewater.htm.
4,279 acres.
85-acre lake with fishing.
130-acre restored Shaker Trace Wetlands with a wildlife viewing shelter located along the Shaker Trace Trail.
Frisbee golf course, three nature trails, two Parcours Fitness Trails and an equestrian trail.
18-hole golf facility with driving range, cllubhouse and snack bar.
46-site campground and picnic and shelter areas.
Soccer complex for games and practices.
Wet playground for kids.
Lake area with paddle boats equipped with cannons.
Two-floored Visitor Center with nature displays and Nature's Niche gift store.

I've heard nothing but good things about this place, but I've never been there.

Very sorry to hear about losing your job.

+1 on this one. This is where i go canoeing with my father-n-law.

I'm also within a short drive of KY's Red River Gorge, and I give it a big thumbs-up.
But if winter camping is your game, check out the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, on Michigan's upper peninsula. Gorgeous in the summer, and I'd bet my RC-4 even more amazing in the winter.

Have to agree with this one. That's my old stomping grounds. Beautiful and some great trails to actually get away from people.

+1 for getting outside to clear your head after leaving a job. In 1998, I quit my 80-120+ hr/week job at a Boston law firm. 24 hours later, I was standing at the Mexican border fence with my pack on gazing north, and took the first step of a 2650 mile hike of the Pacific Crest Trail.

It was one of the best and most dramatic transitions of my life. glefic, don't hang out at the house stewing - grab your gear and get out there. I haven't been in the OH/IL/MI/KY backcountry much, but it sounds like you have a lot of great choices.

...and congratulations on your new beginning.

Having a job within walking distance helps save money on gas when you're working part time (been there myself!). Congratulations, and best of luck!
