Just got my 110FG

Earl,
Thanks for the pictures!

I'm going to have to get a digital camera after I receive my Custom 110 so I can post some pictures too.

You guys may think I'm being a bit silly, but that accident I saw really made me think...

I got my seatbelt wakeup call from a local village policeman. Now I have a ball-peen hammer and a Mikov Rescue taped to the front seat frame of my Xterra. ;)

Y'know, I hadn't thought of that, but a small ball-peen would definitely be great for bashing your way into or out of a window. Currently I have a kids'-size aluminum softball bat wedged under the seat... ball-peen hammer would be both easier to use inside the car and less likely to look suspicious if I ever get pulled over and a LEO sees it.

I thought of mounting the "seat-belt knife" to the dash or hanging it from the rear-view with a zip-tie, but I was afraid it would only attract thieves. Maybe I can find a more hidden, but still accesible spot for it. Till then the center console (my girlfriend's suggestion, actually... I was thinking "glovebox" but she pointed out that it might be hard to reach from an awkward position).

I won that 199x I was bidding on... $25.45 shipped. When I get the knife I will do a full comparison of it and the Gerber AR300. For my purposes, I only want it for cutting my way out of a seatbelt....
(at 6'4", 230#, I think the seatbelt latch would be pretty well jammed if I ever ended up downside-up)
...but I will compare them both for general usefullness as well, before I grind the tips round for safety.

Well all I can say is that my 110FG is now at the top of my all time favourite list of knives. Beautiful lines.. solidly built and sharp as hell. Everything you want a knife to be.

And what really pisses me off? I have had people say "yeah John its a knife ...so?" but its not, the 110 is a Legend! and the look and feel of the knife is outstanding.

But like I have had said I have a lot of hi tech looking knives - all are functional weapons. But the old style 110 is just begging to be used. The only problem is that I am in the UK and all lock knives are now illeagal to carry :( but of all my knives I must say that the 110FG is dying for one of those Crocodile Dundee moments when if I ever get threatened by a thug. He pulls out some cheapo potato peeler and I say "thats not a knife this is" and whip out the 110 :) :) Oh I can dream cant I?

I hear ya, man... many people are so used to a disposable-type economy that they have no appreciation for craftsmanship. Imagine me tryin' to explain to my girlfriend why "this $1500 guitar" is better than "that $400 guitar" :)

BTW I'm sorry if I hijacked the thread with my questions about seat-belt-escape, etc... and allow me to say that if I could only own ONE knife, city and country, self-defense, camping, concealable, open envelopes, skin a deer, slice veggies, doesn't freak out the citizens or cops, totally versatile and reliable... it would be my beat-up, trusty ol' Buck 110.

See my other posts where I mentioned that my Dad (a very no-nonsense guy) refers to ALL lockbacks as either a "Buck Knife" ... a "miniature Buck Knife" ... or an imitation. There's a damn good reason for that :)

Yeah sure... I will get the Camera out tomorrow when my kids are not around (ex wife hates my ummm errrm toys) and post some pics of my favourite knives if you want..

There are a few Bucks.. and a few SOGs too...The Gerber 650 reprofile I did I am somewhat impressed with. But My favourite 5 are...

Buck 110FG
SOG S1
SOG Tech Bowie
Benchmade Mini Pika (current EDC - still against the law)
SOG Seal Pup - Seki Steel (very very nice)

You can still take the 110 on a camping trip .... can't you ?

This is somewhat of a fuzzy point at the moment. I do a lot of cycling mainly off road and through the woods. I take my Pika,my leatherman micra and a Black Swiss Army knife in my Hydrapack. Pretty much covers most eventualities... but at the moment its really tough in the UK on knives. So while some say you can take a knife like the 110 camping... some say you cant. But the penalty is now up to 5 years in prison.

Confused? Good... cos I am too.

I totally agree with you there!

I appreciate quality - I want something that I can depend on. I see a knife as a tool. A knife is not dangerous. Nor is a gun. I have owned guns. I owned two Beretta Model 92's. They where nice. But not beautiful. My knives are both beautiful and functional.

But people see knives in such a negative way that they dont see the history behind them. I have a SOG Bowie knife used in Vietnam. Thats not a knife. Its a peice of history. That knife worked in the worst possible enviroment and someone had depended on it.

Sorry I am going on one here... but really pisses me off when people look at something but dont see....

It happens, Maverick. "oh, it's 'just' a knife" or a guitar or a file or whatever. People who aren't used to relying on them, don't notice the beauty inherent in a fine tool/weapon/instrument. I totally agree with you about knives being tools, that's how I was raised. Even a fighting knife is only a tool to help you get yourself out of trouble.

You mentioned history... I agree that the "standard" Buck folders and fixed blades have stood the test of time; people wouldn't keep buying them if they were junk designs. Not to mention, that SOG you have, or someone's grandpa's Ka-Bar from VN or Korea may have saved their bacon.

On the same lines, I wouldn't hesitate to take a $20 Green River skinner into the woods. Same idea, although much less refined; simple design, toughly built, very versatile. If I had to, I'm quite confident I could do everything I really needed to with one of those.

Can ya tell that I'm a "traditionalist"? :)

I will only add that I frankly find it pretty surprising that Buck is still acheiving that high level of quality and for a very fair price. They either pay their labor force in peanuts, or they have the efficiency thing down pat. It's EXTREMEly rare to find anything made with that kind of quality for the money, these days.
