I was pleased with a few things:

1) They are making knives in more than 420 HC - although with their heat treat - it is a nice steel. They have selections in 154 CM and S30V.

2) Most of their knives appear to still be made in America.

3) I liked the look of these knives for my specs.

The Alpha Hunter:

The Gen 5:

This folder blade style looked neat:

I am going to pick up the Alpha Hunter soon and I will take some pics.

I love the 110. The main reasons are that it's relatively inexpensive, a good size, feels great in the hand, and slices well. So many tacticals look cool, are lightweight, easy to operate, and have great steel but have overly thick grinds and/or are painful to use for long periods of time.

The Gen 5 looks nice and apparently you aren't the only one with an eye on them.... as their out of stock!

KnifeCenter is showing the 154CM Gen 5 for $90 and available.

msiley,

Cabelas sells the Buck 110 with an ATS34 blade. Its listed as their Alaskan Guide Series but it is a Buck built for Cabelas.

I like the folder, it looks pretty interesting. I like those alpha hunters. A buddy of mine has 2, and they are real usefull.

Hey Talfuchre,

I have an Alpha Dorado in 420HC and one in 154CM. This knife is my all time favourite little folder. I wanted something not too big so as to send the sheeple on a letter writing campaign, especially because I use it at work (in their house) but also something sturdy so that if I finished work early and went out for a quickee (hike that is), I would have something sturdy enough to make fire boards and trap parts, if I wished. I find the little Dorado fills the bill. It also feels nice in the hand.

As far as the Gen 5, I handled one in 420HC the other day when at House of Knives. Looks like an interesting little FB. Felt good in the hand. I thought it was made in China, but I just checked their website and it's flying the Stars and Stripes, so maybe I was mistaken.

BTW, I don't know if you agree, but compared to their old web site, the new one sucks. I even sent them an email to that effect, but no response.

Why didn't I notice the Vanguard before? Looks like an awesome user in addition to my similarly shaped Böker (which is my poodle knife:D)
Seriously, the Vanguard looks great! Any experiences?

The Cabela's-only Vanguard seies, like my AG110 and AG192, have a black Al-Ti-N coating over there S30V steel blade. Great knives - the Vanguard inspired me to get the 'regular' Paul Bos heat treated 420HC rosewood version as a 'user'. What a great woods knife - and the protection afforded by the finger guard, combined with the comfortable handle, make my tired/carpal tunnel problem hand a longer and safer operator. Sure, I eventually surpassed it as a 'bushcraft' knife with an expensive Bark River - and maybe even another newer Buck, but it will still see many trips. That rubber handled 692 variant comes with a nylon sheath - probably better in the weather than my leather sheaths.

I bought the little Buck Gen5 that came out first this year - about two months back. I wanted last year's - the '07 005LE - but at $200+ even on sale, it was a bit too much. This year's 005RW looks good for ~$90 - except for the lined, a la checkering on a gun stock, rosewood handle. Reportedly, Buck has had some sheath problems with that Gen5, thus it's absence at dealers. I bought an 005GY about two months back - when they came out. They run $55-$60 delivered - and are great - uncannily sharp - and a great feel. I've reviewed mine before here - somewhere! It may be my day-hiker knife, as it's nylon sheath has horizontal carry loops - probably more 'sheeple'-friendly. Sharp, albeit thin, knife. Definitely a knife - not a pry bar.

Yeah, that new catalog has been drooled on a bit here, that's for sure!
