As for the permanent marker- as 42B mentioned, it WILL fade to purple. There is nothing even remotely permanent about "permanent marker". Paint would be your best option, IMHO. Oil paint, preferably. You'd have to give it a few weeks to soak in and completely dry though.

micarta takes dye (RIT) pretty well- you can go to a darker color, but not lighter

RIT dye has been used pretty successfully w/ Surefire G2's, AR plastic bits/pieces and micarta

first thing i noticed too especially given that it's a downed pilot's survival knife and all. kinda pointless for the kamikaze pilots to have.

I with ya on the sheath retension on the lite machete......I think on using my molle back as you did or my bungee cord from the RAT pouch ? going to tinker with that this weekend

thanks, tony. i tried the junglas molle back and it works even better since the handle size is close so i ordered the molle back for the esee-5.

yup, i'm a regular at ar15.com as well and the non-black pmags takes rit dye very well. the dye penetrates the plastic surprisingly deep so i'm sure micarta will soak it up just fine.

i dyed a couple of white socks black but after 20 min of stirring and simmering i knew i have no patience for it i'm man enough to wear a pink shirt from time to time (only when i'm with my gf to impress her...sssh. lol) so a purple handle can't be that bad. i'll dye it then...maybe.

With the Machete retention, I just keep a keychain clip on the sheath, and snap the lanyard into that. It's not tight, but it's not going anywhere. Only bother with that when it's on pack though. On belt I don't really have an issue with it.
