Just got my new AK Bowie!

I'd love to see the Cherokee Rose Bowie pop up on a daily special. I may have to order one of those.

After reading posts by Yvsa following a Murali Kami made Cherokee Rose dotd, I decided to custom order one also to be made by Murali Kami. It arrived about four weeks later.

As luck would have it, the first shipment of Baby Cherokee Rose Bowie's arrived at the same time and I was lucky to get a horn handled blem also made by Murali.

They make for a great pairing and are a testament to the genius of Yvsa's design.

The one she sent me is a trip and I will post pics as soon as my camera either dries out from Starbucks or I get a new one this week. The cool part about this AK Bowie is its not like the ones I have seen pictures of, it's almost perfectly straight with no exaggerated belly it looks like a giant sized spear point chopper, I am just so tickled its the best.

That sounds more like a Munk Chunk cleaver than an AK bowie.

If its got a straight edge, it's probably the Munk Chunk Cleaver. Odd story, the Munk Chunk is what the AK Bowie was originally designed to look like by forum member Cobalt. The kamis did what they do and modified the design a bit.

Several years later, forumite Munk sort of dusted off the design for a heavy duty cleaver for kitchen use. Thus the Munk Chunk Cleaver was born:thumbdn:

Personally, the AK bowie is the perfect design for my needs. Large, but not overly so. Packable, easy to sharpen, bombproof.

I also love the Cherokee Rose. However, the CR is my bump in the night blade. I trust it fully for such thing. The AKB would be my number one pick for a "this and only this" all purpose chopping blade. I love it:thumbup:

I still need to replace mine though. I gifted mine to my dad a few years ago. Oh, and for those that find the grip a little "edgy", just take a little time with a razor blade and sand paper. Scrape off the edges and lightly smooth them out. It won't take much:thumbup:

Maybe it is...got a pic?? If it is then I am lovin me some munk chunk cleaver.

I don't have the search feature, being a lowly registered user...:p

I haven't seen any of these come down the pike in a while..... :(

Andrew you sir are the MAN!!

That is my knife and to be honest as a camp knife that design imho has it all over the Bowie...the weight balance is perfect and the shape of it (aping a chef knife) is perfect for me.

Thanks man!! I guess my AK is a Cleaver...Perfect.

It really isn't that far off the "Green River/scalper" knife, is it? "Camp knife" is, indeed, the perfect description.

Does anybody have any spine shots of their AK Bowie? I know the tangs are supposed to be tapered, but how tapered? Is the reasoning behind that to orient the weight better for chopping?

And if I wanted an AK Bowie with little or no taper in the tang, how hard would it be to get? I realize that this depends on the individual kami who makes the knife, but I'm curious nonetheless.

Thanks:)

either are too pretty for me, I have a bad habit of taking anything and everything into the field. ;)

Those things are hella tough... not a problem taking them into the filed. 'Cept for the stains on the finish & the re-sharpening...

Sounds like you might be worried that there would be some loss of strength from a tapered tang?

Considering the thinnest section on most of HI's tapered tangs are just as thick as most hard use fixed blades, it's nothing to be concerned about.

Also, don't worry about getting the 'perfect' knife because there's no such thing. A perfect knife in a drawer is far from perfect as it failed its purpose of being a knife. Just use it and love it until it doesn't work anymore, then learn from it and move on. ;)

100eyes,

That's a good point, and it partially addresses my concerns. Thanks! :D

I'm still curious about balance and whatnot though. A little blade heavy is good, but part of why I'm more intrigued by the AK Bowie is that I don't want something as blade heavy as a full-blown khukuri.

I wasn't able to find any pictures of top-down shots of the AK Bowies, and my curiosity isn't going to be quenched until I do, for better or worse. ;)

Swimmingbird mine goes from 1/2" down to 3/8" at the pommel, it is blade heavy but in a great, sever or cut through something way. This knife is simply in another league, primitive, bullet proof and built to walk with you through any journey not connected to pavement.

Cool, that's not too extreme a taper. For some reason, I was envisioning something much more pronounced.

Thank you for the kind words
