Just got my RC-3 in: a little underwhelmed

I have smaller hands and I love the feel of the RC-3. It seems to be the perfect fixed EDC knife. I just need to take it out and use the heck out of it so I can take advantage of the warranty(which, somehow, I don't think I'll need). It is easily my favorite knife right now... um... if you couldn't tell. :D

If you want, you can always send it to me(these other guys don't like knives) and I'll dispose of it to your liking... honest. :)

Really, it's all about what you prefer. I don't mind a little heavier blade, knowing it's rock solid and not likely to fail. There is not one 3" folder I have ever held that felt sturdier than an RC-3.

I got my RC-4, RC-6 and Izula from Derrick at KnivesShipFree.com. Shipping to Canada was inexpensive and they offer great service.

thanks bud ill check it out.

question, i want the kydex sheath however i do not use MOLLE type gear. What sheath / attachment can i use the kydex with for a standard waist belt? thanks

Hey hung solo, just google Rat Knives and a plethora of sites will appear. Try Ebay, I guarantee you'l be able to find a great deal man.........If you want a great sheath check out redhillsheaths.com These are GREAT PEOPLE.

I think the RC-4 is the sweet spot in the Rat Cutlery line, but the RC-3 can do a lot for its size.

thanks but i am still curious on which of the RAT sheaths are best for just a standard waste belt..

The RC-4 is available with the nylon attachment for the kydex sheath. It allows for belt carry as well as MOLLE attachments. I really like it and will probably order the equivalent for my RC-6. I don't know if you can order that part separately or not.

Seems like RC-3 vs RC-4 is personal preference. I have an RC-3 and love the thing. For my dayhiking and general bumming around I don't need the extra 5/8" of edge that the RC-4 has.

I don't like bringing a big folder into the woods. I hate the feeling of a heavy knife in my pocket banging into my thigh every step I take. One of the things that sets the RC series apart from other FBs is the sheath system. And it is a system. Most manufacturers design a knife and then make a sheath for it. Most RAT Cutlery nuts will agree that you can't have the knife without the sheath. There's a million and one ways to mount these sheaths to your body, your belt, your clothes, your pack, etc. so that it's out of your way and not bothering you. And you never have to worry about that knife coming out of the sheath when you don't want it to.

Obviously the RC-3 has a lot of fans, but I am with the OP in that I think a 3 inch fixed blade just does not offer that much more than a big folder as far as out-door utility to justify carrying it. When I carry a fixed blade in the woods, I want at least a 4 inch blade. Indeed, my "perfect" outdoor fixed blade is 4.5-5.5 inches. If I need something shorter than 4 inches that I'll use a folder, If I need something bigger than 6 inches, I'll use an axe.

YMMV of course. ;)

Actually, I think the RC-3 is closer to 4" (handle to tip) and the RC-4 is more like 4.5".

ksf is amazing and the leather sheaths are great for theprice.
the rc3 is an excellent knife thin enough to slice like hell and thick enough to baton and handle almost any chore.

You may be surprised by the RC3 once you live with it for awhile. A great deal of thought went into the design of the RAT lineup. Each one has its niche, but can do many things well. I had similar thoughts as well. 8 RATS later, they are my "go to" blades. Just give 'em a chance.
