Just got my ZT 0566, dissapointed. Just de-assisted my 0566, AMAZED!

Kershaw/ZT constantly has amazing designs, I get ready to swipe my credit card, and then I find out they are automatic..... then I put my card back in my wallet.

Hi All, new to the forums here :D

Got my 0566 last week and damn that thing is hard to open! It was tearing apart my index finger from flipping into the jimping. I de-assisted it and played with the handle and pivot screws to get the centering down for about 5 minutes and DANG, it's silky smooth now. I can also actually use the blade stops to flick it open with ease. I was seriously thinking about returning this knife ( I have never returned a knife before) and figured I would give this a shot and it changed the knife! Does anyone actually prefer the assisted opening? Maybe mine was just a fluke about how hard it was to open but the spring plus the detent made it impossible to open with the blade stops and painful to open with the flipper. Plus, it didn't even open that fast with the spring anyway.
It was harder to open mine with the flipper and I couldn't use the thumb studs. After I deassisted it, I can flick it open with the thumb studs easily and the flipper is perfect. I can even middle finger flick it open with the studs :D No blade play and it drops free when the lock is disengaged

I hate assisted.

First, the torsion bar will wear out or break. Guaranteed.

Second, it's boring. Manual flippers have a great tactile feel, you can practice opening them and get good at it, it's engaging, whereas assisted openers are just like pressing an automated button, yawn, takes all the fun out of it.

Is it easy to Re Assist the 566 if needed? Not that I plan on it. I don't have the spring.

Easy as pie, buddy. Make sure the knife is in the open position when you take it apart. Place the torsion bar back in the cavity, and make sure you grease it up so it doesn't rattle.

Make sure the tip of the torsion bar fits in the small hole in the blade. Cover up the cavity with the thin steel plate, and proceed to put the scales back together. Boom. Assisted.

I've had mine for about 2 months and my fingers were killing me as I opened it thousands of times to try to break it in. It was almost un-openable when I first got it and it did become slightly better but never what I expected. For the first time ever I deassisted a knife, or even opened a knife for that matter. And I couldn't be happier. It opens smoothly now. Imagine that. It still won't open with the thumb studs/blade stops but at least it flips. I went from hating and regretting it to liking it a lot.

Thanks for posting this. I deassisted my 566 when I first got it and it wouldn't do right. After reading this thread I tried again and was able to get the knife to flip unassisted and lock up tight with the blade centered perfectly. I believe the lock up is a little deeper, maybe 60% now. I love this knife even more now thanks to this thread!!!

I re-assisted it for a couple weeks to give it a chance, but the torsion bar is coming back out today. I definitely prefer the manual action of this knife. It eve SOUNDS better XD

My 0566 came deassissted from a trade. It was pretty smooth. I did take the knife apart, polished the washers and re-greased it. Smooth as butter. I recieved a new torsion bar and clip from Kershaw last week and loaded them up. I see what everyone is saying about it being stiffer but I like it assisted. I think it also helps that my knife was well broken in when I got it but I think I'm going to leave it assisted. I've never had a "spring loaded" knife before so this is fun for me. Either way, this is my new favorite knife

I knew nothing about knives when I bought the Kershaw Blur a while ago. Hated the AO and didn't know about de-assisting the knife. Ended up giving it away.
Wish I would have kept it.

Wow man that is really nice , my 0566 is smooth but not as yours because it doesn't closes under the weight of the blade :(, but i still love my 0566 she's a badass.

Mine is also de-assisted and the washers were replaced with hinderer washers. After some heavy use at work it's now broken in and CRAZY smooth! The blade now closes under the weight of the blade. The pivot screw needs a tiny bit of tightening occasionally to minimize blade play, but I use it pretty heavily on a daily basis. The detent is good. I've never had a problem with it opening in my pocket despite the fact that I carry it "tip up" style and I do quite a bit of running and jumping at work. Now I just need to figure out how to get this elmax steel razor sharp with my fine grit ceramic rods :(

just occurred to me that while deassisting my 0566, I might have swapped the washers. Can someone let me know how the different sized washers are supposed to be used? I assume the smaller one on the lock bar side?

Smaller one on the G-10 side. It's sized that way to allow movement of the torsion bar.

Buuuuut, since you de-assisted it you should just replace the small washer with another larger one. I've heard this helps smooth the action out a tad.

thanks for the tip, GS!

mulehead, what size Hinderer washers did you get -- and where did you get them, please?

Two of the same size or different sizes?
