just got the short KA-BAR

I had a regular Kabar, but it got ripped off along with all my other 782 gear when I had to leave my malfunctioning truck on the side of a south Dallas highway. It took a very good edge, and wasn't so expensive that I would hesitate using it.

My wife is geting me the short kabar usa leather handles plain edge for christmas...can't wait...not that I'm a mad batoner but I was wondering if these are tough enough to handle it...THanks for all the help

Not sure whats wrong with a saber grind, people seem to like scandi grinds for bushknives and as far as I can tell theyre the exact same thing.

The rear guard can easily be removed with a hacksaw and a file. Maybe get some cold gun blue to to darken the exposed bit for aesthetics.

If you check out the knife destruction video of the kabar usmc you'll see that the failure started from bending the tang by batoning (dude was beating the hell out of it trying to get through a knot in a 4x4) but Im confident the damage could have been avoided if the rear guard was removed (he was pounding right on guard which focused all the energy right where the tang and blade meet) and if better technique was employed (http://www.barkriverknives.com/docs/batoning.pdf)

wow that was some video....they abused it for sure but I was hopin it wouldve held up a bit better,,,

sketchbag, from what I can tell a flat (saber) grind uses the grind to thin the blade, then have a secondary bevel for the actual cutting area.

Seems like a Scandi grind is a singular bevel on each side that makes up the cutting surface. Or maybe I'm wrong...

I was planning on getting my girlfriend a short Ka-bar with the kraton handle, and this just confirms that it's the right thing to do. She has a problem with carrying around a larger blade, but with some explaining of the multi-knife theory, she has warmed up to carrying a mora, kabar, and tomahawk.

I bought a full-size Ka-bar with the kraton handle and love it!!!
