Just had a survival situation

Well maybe not survival but anyway I just got home from getting my jeep unstuck, me and my son went fishing and I buried my jeep in a sink hole. I have a wrangler with a 4" lift and 33x12.5 tires, and I put it over the hubs. I even sent my son out to check the hole and he walked across it and tested it before I drove on it. It was dry and cracked on top so you could walk on it but when I tried to drive on it it was soup underneath.

We walked about 2 miles to get cell phone service then called my wife to come pull us out. Just goes to show you what we talk about all the time, you better be prepared, I think it is time to buy that high lift jack I have been meaning to get. Chris

I'm glad you got out ok. Did you have a winch? Or was that buried too?

I pulled many a truck out of "puddles" during hunting season. One truck was in water up to its hood. Amazing how deep those things are "underneath".

Glad it turned out for the best. As per Sams, I know a couple of folks who carry small sledge hammer, spike and chain to use with their winch to pull themselves out when stuck. The spike lets you do it when there aren't any trees near by.

Of course I don't have winch, sledge or spike in my truck so I would have been stuck along with you :)

No I don't have a winch, even though I have 2 4x4s that are modified for off road I very rarely get stuck because I am super careful and don't wheel for fun. My wife couldn't believe it when I called her to come pull me out. I mainly use my jeep for hunting and fishing and it does spend a great deal of time in 4 wheel drive but I am the type to drive around a mud hole if possible.

This hole was dry as a bone on top and as dry as our weather has been I didn't think it would be a problem and to make matters worse I could have driven around I just thought I could make it, famous last words :o.

Me and my son were through fishing and actually looking for another take out point for canoeing and kayaking. Chris

EDIT: A high lift jack and a chain is as good as a winch but slower, I have been meaning to get one but just haven't gotten around to it, I think that changed today. I do a lot of coon hunting in some fairly remote areas, this situation at 3 am is absolutely no fun, I think I will go ahead and order the jack and a mount on payday. Chris

I've self rescued from such situations for years with a come-along and a set of log chains. With some thought and technique, one long chain and two chokers 8-10' long, and a few clevises, I can get out of a lot of sticky situations. Most of this fits in .30 cal ammo cans and stays in the truck year round. Glad you didn't have vehicle damage and got out ok even if the wife ribs you about it. :D

PS- A hi-lift jack is a good idea as well, even if it is difficult to hide in a jeep.

My come-along is in my son's truck, the chain was in my jeep, lot good that does either of us.:(

I am going to get a hood or bumper mount for the high lift. Chris

I have to say anytime your out in the woods, " you will never know". Things happen. I always have chokers and tow straps in the tool box. I manage to keep one or two comealongs also.

I have allot of stories but this one is sorta funny. On an elk hunt I showed up at my friends with 3/4" line, 1 1/2 ton come along, and firewood in the bed of my truck. My friend laughed and said I was being ridiculous. Before we were off the mountain I had to go get my "stuff". His Toyota slid in the snow and hung half way into a gulley. It was so serious I didn't even laugh about it.

I do now. :-)

Yeah but this minor event has the gears in your mind turning now so it will not likely repeat itself. You do have that gear oil bottle to use for a make-do fuel pump, right? :D

hows the jeep doing? glad your wife was there to help. sounds like the water table is kinda high there in that spot . either that or theres a spring just right under foot.

Swamp on one side and a beaver pond on the other, I should have known better. Jeep is fine just muddy as hell. Chris

I had a similar situation in my Forester, I was out driving in the winter after a flood. Some HUGE ruts had been filled in with leaves, and then the water froze. So, it looked perfectly normal, but once the whole car was on the ice, it sunk straight down. Thanks teenagers for using the river road for mudding! Thanks to Subaru's being awesome, I eventually got out.

Glad that you were able to have your wife come get you! Are other car is just front wheel drive.

ive burried a few trucks my self but it was always with freinds and tow straps:D. i guess i dont have to tell you about tellico:o. i dont off road for fun anymore either , to damn expensive . the places i like to go require it though .

No no need to tell me about tellico or snowbird, I can taste the fresh brookies cooked on a campfire now.:)

That is the problem with me also, the things I do and places that I go I need a 4x4. I will be cleaning all week and getting the grease gun out next weekend. Chris

It is a Law of Nature that no matter how much cable, chain and rope you have, the anchor point will be just beyond the reach of all of them hooked together.

good on ya chris , yer a smart guy . time to go to bed gotta get up 0500 hrs and im hoppin in the ole armord truck tomorrow , have a goodn. we need to pray for some friggin rain guys .

I drive a 4x2 long bed. I've been stuck in wet grass many times. And several feet from civilation at that.:D:p

I had a F150 4x2 with a 302 a few years back. I went to a party and pulled off the side of the road on a slight slope, later after the dew fell I went to leave and the rear of my truck slid down the slope and stuck fast. Needless to say I took a whole lot of ribbing, light in the rear pickups are horrible if you don't throw some weight in the bed. Chris

I was once stuck in mud up to the bumper on my FJ40. I broke the shear pin on my PTO winch trying to pull it out. Had a spare but had to work by feel to replace it. Mosquitoes too. Lucky it was on top where the shaft came up to the winch. Glad you had someone to pull you out. Sometimes cell phones do come in handy. Sometimes you can't find anything to anchor on to use a winch. Then you just sit and wait for some one to come along and hope he isn't driving a Prius.
