I'll do my best to field this one. If I leave out anything important I'm sure someone will chime in.
Here we go.....when events dictate you need to actually open the Gunting there are at least four options. In no particular order:
1) Use the hole in the blade and with the pad of the thumb just swing it open as you would any other Spyderco knife.
2) Perhaps your wearing gloves or its very cold and the feeling in your thumb is diminished. Instead of trying to place the pad into the hole hook the inside of your thumb behind ramp and swing it open.
3) With your left hand open and palm up (VERY IMPORTANT) take the Gunting in your right hand, hook the ramp onto the edge of the palm near the base of the pinky and rotate your left hand clockwise while doing the opposite with your right hand.
4) Lastly you can hook the ramp on the anatomy of your opponent. If the contact point has a small radius (like a forearm)the result is an open knife. If however the radius is large like a thigh or larger, in addition to opening the Gunting the natural follow through will result in a blade tip puncture and probably a nasty cut to boot.
I've done my best to describe these movements but they are really easy to do and quite instintive. My best advise is to get your hands on one but I will warn you its easier to pick it up than to put it down.
