...here's some photos of my new buffer. It's a PPC Model 3 (Phillip Patton Creation)
3/4 HP, 1" x 32" shaft, 1800 rpm.
Everything was scrounged except the shaft and the motor (which I paid ten dollars for at a salvage place) and one of the pulleys.
Go ahead and make fun of it. I know it's ugly, but the price was right. :D

Sometimes the girl that's the most fun to dance with isn't necessarily the purdiest one.... ;)

You must have gone to the same school I went to.
I usually overbuild things too! :D
I sure do love home builts though!
Looks fine to me Phillip!!

i guess your right. :-) I actually always hand rub my knives now, so this will mostly be used for guards and handles. but I'm sure it'll be worth it. Before it was mounted on the same stand as my belt grinder, and kept picking up grit. :(

thanks! If you think this is over built, you should see my belt grinder. :D

Thanks guys! I probably should give it a paint job...
IG, you have interesting tastes! :)

Yeah, clearance was my main motivation for making this in the first place.

We have a military rule within the Rangers...if something is stupid, but it works, then it ain't stupid. It looks as if it will do the trick.

Dude - that grinder's cool! Anything that you make yourself, that works well for it's intended purpose, is cool. Your grinder has "soul" (but not quite as much as Ig...)

That's pretty cool. And, nothing surprises me anymore. Not since I visited John Fitch, and saw his homemade grinder with the 5 hp motor. :)

Bennett, I forgot to mention that on end of the shaft is turned down to accept the tapered spindle for buffing wheels, the other is threaded for mounting grinding wheels. Works pretty good, but the shaft is just cold rolled steel, so it has some "wobble". Soon I'd like to upgrade to turned ground and polished, which is a lot straighter.

Danbo, i wish my belt grinder had a 5 HP motor. :D I wish I had enough juice going to my shop to handle a 5 HP motor. :(

Here's a photo of my 2 HP belt grinder. I'm pretty happy with it so far.

Phillip, you seem to like ugly things.:D
My guess is all that matters is that things do the job for which they were intended.
I drive an old '81 Chevy Malibu classic, the rust is starting to take it's toll and it is a dreary gray, this thing is ugly, especially from the back.
However, when I turn the key, even in minus 30 C, it goes. Sometimes the guys with the electronic fancy gismos do not start up!

Enjoy your machines.
