I haven't opened either of the two packages yet.........I've had them for a couple of hours but had to walk back to my apt to grab a maxpediton-ripoff side bag, some tactical pens, a gerber artifact and a streamlight pt2l flashlight.

The anticipation is building...........I have my cold steel pendleton mini hunter which I use as an EDC box opening knife (receive packages daily at work) ready to cut the tape..................

The smile on my face is huge, I wish I had a camera to take a picture......wait I think I see one!!!!!

Pictures coming soon......

Much thanks for the purchase and for being here on the forums!

Your gonna love that HEST. I just got mine and have a 3 MIL on it's way soon.

Tony.

Nothing like a guy getting new knife packages :D

Sorry to hear about your recent loss Bro.

Hope all goes well for the family at the funeral, amigo.

It went very well, it was this morning and it was a good service. My Uncle seemed in better spirits and I feel good about the whole thing. The eulogy my other Uncle gave was hard to bear, though. She was a truly special person who genuinely cared about everyone and made everyone feel special and that she was proud of them all while going through years of pain.

Anyways.......Thanks again to everybody. There's nothing like good old retail therapy to make yourself feel better for a while, though.

Pics are coming! Just need to upload them.

Here is a wide shot with both knives and their respective sheaths.

Here is a picture with the handles lined up:

Here is something I found interesting after handling them. Although they are about the same size (3 seems 1/4" longer), the HEST has a longer grip and the prybar end helps keep it in your hand. I can kind of bring my pinky back and brace it against the prybar end. Your thumb is all choked up along the top and the tip of your thumb is over cutting surface.....this could matter to someone who wanted to do some fine knife-work.

The 3 fits in your hand a bit differently. Instead of feeling like you are all choked up on the knife, my hand fits the handle great with my pinky on the micarta....it definitely isn't too short. The knife feels more like a good-sized knife extending out of your hand opposed to a smaller bit of knife extending out.

My hands are biggish, not too huge or large, but I can choke up on the hest with my thumb covering all but 2/3" of the blade....only 1/2" or so extending from my thumb. With the 3 choked up, I have a good 2.5" or so when I choke up on it. I can take pictures if you don't understand, but I'll need to get new batteries for my camera.

Here are two pictures where I align them according to where your index finger rests. You can see the longer handle of the HEST and how the blade extends from where you'd handle/have control over it.

I think this could really sway someone's purchase. If you want a knife you can choke up really high on, get a HEST or an IZULA-II (haven't reviewed/compared yet, just handled). If you want a knife that when you choke up on you still have a lot of knife protruding, get the 3.

Let me know if you have any questions. I can take my Izula I and II and take comparison pics for anyone if they want them, but I am sure somebody has beat me to it.....this forum is full of like-minded people.

Congrats on the purchases and thanks for the comparison pics, might put into perspective the differences for some people! Also, don't forget that on the 3, that choil is there for a reason, and makes choking up very nice.

Kyle.

Right. When you choke up on the 3 using the Choil, it feels similar to how the HEST feels when you choke up to the guard, except that you have a larger blade with the 3.

With that said, I can see a need for both!

First, sorry to hear of your loss. Smoke and prayers...
Second, I've been looking at the 3 MIL to replace my RC 3 I gifted to a friend, and you just pushed me over the edge. Thanks for the pics.

Thanks, appreciate it.

It's a good price and it comes with the MB which I find great.

The tip of the handle (base?) is also pointed an can be used as an impact weapon to break glass or defend yourself without using the blade.....like a kubaton.

Definitely pick up another one! I have an RC-3MIL-P and loved it so much I had to get the serrated version......glad that it's an ESEE so they look a little different.....easier to explain to the girlfriend that they are technically different knives besides the serrations! :D

Nice! I have two HESTs and a 3MIL-S they're among my favorite knives. This brings back memories as I can still remember when they looked that shiny and new. I wonder if you could take a close-up of the 3MIL, it looks like it has more serrations than my older one, and I am wondering if it really does or if it's just a trick of the lighting.

I like the way you can choke up on the HEST too. I really gives you great control of the blade. I don't have a 3 yet but I have been thinking of the 3MIL. How do you like the serrations? All my other ESEEs are plain blades. I was thinking of going with the 3MIL with the serrations and a clip point. I am still torn between the 3MIL-P vs the the 3 MIL-S Enjoy your new purchases.

Thanks for the comparison. Im really looking into getteing a HEST in the next week.
Can you post the measurement of the width of the Sheath for the HEST?

The sheath is 4.5" long and about 3" (2.875") along the width of the base. The total length of the knife in the sheath is approx. 8.25". I'd definitely recommend getting one....it has a nice size blade and you can choke up on it a lot. Let me know if you need a source, I got mine for $98 shipped.

I think the EsKabar would be a close comparison, but no handles, prybar and other cool stuff. I have the EsKabar and could take pictures but I'd need to buy new batteries.

Mistwalker - It has 5 serrations. I believe I counted 7 or 8 serrations on the ESEE 6. I'm not sure about the 5, maybe Jeff or someone else could chime in.

MJC7 - I haven't had a chance to use the serrations yet. A lot of people here who don't like serrated blades say the ESEE serrations are pretty good, though. I love serrations so once I try it I'm sure I'll like it. Also, knowing the dimensions of the serrations should make it easy to get a diamond hone in that size....I'm thinking a DMT Diafold would work, but I'm not sure of their width. If you like serrations I'd get a serrated. I got the serrated and plan to use it as an EDC-type attached to a bag with a plain HEST or Izula on belt or pocket. That way I have a serrated blade if I need it and a smaller blade on my person.

I've been handling the HEST in my girlfriend's apartment and it really does have a nice feel in the hand. Choked up with my thumb in the bottle opener part and down a bit with my thumb on the lines before the bottle opener. The first way feels like a small knife with lots of control, the second it feels like a bigger knife for heavier tasks. Definitely a good purchase.

Ok cool, then it is just a trick of the lighting, thanks. I'm going to be getting a new CP version soon but not sure if I want the 3 or the 4. I'm liking the idea of a serrated cp version in a rough situation. I like the idea of the 4 for the woods because of the heavier blade...but the length of the 3 is much easier to deal with in an urban environment.

Yeah, it's a tough decision.....but a good predicament to be in! ;)

I'm going to buy a 4 serrated to complemnt my rc-4. I'm not too sure how I'm going to fit a clip point into the situation, but I'll probably buy a 3, 4 or 5 serrated w/ clip point....maybe the larger one since the serrated edge where I can't use to fine cut can be replaced by the clip point for fine work, and I can re-profile them to different degrees (20 on the large, 15 on the clip point).

Congrats on the new knives. That new knife feeling never gets old. I just received my HEST 2 weeks ago and can't wait to get some hiking time in at first chance. My first ESEE was the 4, which is still my most used when camping and hiking but the Izula is just hard to put down.

I had to buy my son an Izula for Christmas so he would leave mine along. I look forward to putting the HEST through the paces and next I have my sights set on the 6.

Enjoy you new additions and I'm sorry for your losses.

I love my HEST too. Of course, I love my 3's as well!

Enjoy your new toys. . . .

And take care.
