i've been grinding free hand for quite some time and resently decide to make a rest for my grinder and im having a little trouble geting use to it was wondering if you guys had any advice thanks chris

Platen or contact wheel? On my platen t set the spine on the rest and pull the blade acroos pressing on the outside with a push stick. The higher the push point the closer to the edge I remove material. The lower the closer to the spine I move the grind. I replaced the bolts on mine with long studs and wing nuts so I can easily loosen and slide out. I also made some slotted spacers of different thicknesses so on my contact wheel arm I can move the tool rest up/down as I need by installing or removing the spacers. Jim.

I've made 15 to 16 inch tool rests for my grinders to grind at the platen. The extra length helps me a lot. I got the idea from Tim Hancock at Josh Smith's hammerins. Tim does most of his steel removal at the contact wheel, also with a long rest. Then goes to the platen to flatten out the troughs formed by the wheel. He then goes to the disc grinder to make the grinds perfectly flat. Using this method has helped me a lot although I still spend much time hand sanding to make up for my ham fisted grinding skills. Tim teaches the use of the pressure stick that Jim refers to.

thanks guys im using a contact wheel and will and doing hollow grinds thanks for the advice

what are you guys using for push sticks?i try to use them on the blade that havent been ht and they all slip off verry easy. any ides? willy

a magnet on a stick works for me. get one out of a pc hard drive if you can find a junk one. excess heat will loosen the glue that holds them to the plate and no, you cant drill holes in thoes magnets, well maybe with a carbide or diamond drill, but they are super hard and brittle.
