Just made my first step, advice?

IMightBeWrong: You are doing something correctly then. lol
DM: I see no need to upgrade mine at this point, it is working fine also.

Your body needs to adjust to the straight razor; how you hold it, balance the weight, and adjust to the right angle of approach. I tried a straight when moving up from a Gillette Sensor Excel system but it was not an easy transition. Coming back down a step a friend gifted me a '60 TTO (TwistToOpen) 'Flaretip' and I haven't looked back. In all cases preparation and a sharp blade are key to a great shave. Good luck!

I'd start DE shaving, as I have. And as others have said, don't start with Feather blades, but get a sample pack with Derbys, Personnas, Feathers, Astras, assorted Gillettes, etc. I'd also buy yourself a nice brush if you don't like your current one. I find boar brushes work best for soaps as they have more backbone, and you can buy a nice Omega boar brush for $10-20.

YMMV,

Slightly different view from here. Straight razor and DE are different methods of shaving, starting with one won't help at all learning the other. But at least the brush and foam is the same. I'd say start with the one you want to end up using. Personally I use a straight razor almost every day and only ever use a straight. I also use Boots Botanics Shave Gel rather than soaps/foams/brushes http://www.me.boots.com/Botanics/Mens/botanics_mens_normal_dry_shave_gel_200ml.aspx. It's great stuff, you can see what you're doing, it lubes fantastically and there's enough residue left to not get the burn. I have 5 razors and rotate them. It takes me 10 mins start to finish these days (including clean up) but it used to take closer to 45 mins when I first started.
