Anyone here comfortable with just carrying a folder in the woods whether it be a day hike or 5 days? Has anyone ever hiked an extended period of time and never used their bigger blades? I have made due with just a folder before. It wasn't easy, but I made due.

I carried just a Buck Folding Hunter for years and never thought I needed more. Then the internet came along...

I would go into the woods with the Buck 110 without any hesitation what so ever. I have done it countless times. Of course I would rather have two folders in case I drop one or just walk off and leave it. (Old guys do that)

For years I bushwalked with a sak and that's it. You fine peoples are teaching me new and interesting tools to take walking now.:D:D:D:D

SAK Explorer, for many many miles. Try to keep it light when I can. Since hanging out here at BF, I've started carrying a Becker Necker. Won't be too long before I'm lugging around a FBM, I'm sure. Damn you all anyway...

Carried a vintage Puma prince and also the 970 Game Warden for many years and lately the Boker 2000 folder I wouldn't have a problem in the woods with only one of them.

I've gone on many hikes where I only used a folder, but not many (if any) where I only took a folder.

Im with XMP, Always had a stockman of some sort on me and usually that was all that was used, but i always have Sam on my side ( 70 series Colt Combat Commander .45)

I used to put a .22 rifle in the ute , throw my swag and some gear in and go bush for a few weeks at a time , I was living in western NSW at the time but wandered over a big chunk of Vic NSW SA and QLD driving an old valiant with a 44 gallon drum chained down in the back , plumbed in as the fuel tank .

I took my opinel and or okapi for knives , both folders , never thought I was under knifed .

Now Im married , drive a 4x4 , handed my gun in during the buy back , and have to wait for school holidays to go bush for more than an arvo at a time ... and still dont feel under knifed only having a folder

but I do have a bunch of fixed blades to choose from to play with when I go now tho :) life aint all getting slower and older

Myal what model Val?, I used to drive a 265 VJ with a Chrysler front end, almost indestructible, uncomfortable as hell, massive steering wheel coupled with power steering, loved that car, sadly rust made a meal of it and I sold it on.

I've gone full circle I went from a sak or a buck 112 to fallknivens and bark rivers and moras sog etc etc....now I'm back to folders as my main users and have trades off all my fixed blades accept my f1 my mora and my heavy bowie. Although I have been eyeing up a buck 102

Age, the great equalizer. In my youth, I was fine with a simple pocket knife - then an SAK. I even camped with my sons carrying just the SAK. Now they are grown - I have grandchildren - and, there is more of a less agile me. I am retired now, so I have the time. I have the internet - so I have a better education - and quite a selection of tools, thanks guys! I also have a satelite TV receiver - and watch Discovery & Science channels. I have a credit card, too... I could be Bear Grylls - stomp the woods in the day, 'copter out to a proper motel/lodge for the night - and tote a $700+ Bayley knife.

I guess it's silly - the TV brought us entertainment - then news - now, info-mercials. Now the 'internet' - for scientific data communication - right! I did enjoy woods-stomping with just a SAK - or Buck Stockman/110. Now, much of the time I could be doing that is spent either reading here about what I 'need' - or driving around town looking for same. Yesterday, I would have been far better served by driving to a state park - and taking a hike with my SAK or 110. Instead, We drove all over the area in search of nothing - ate fast food we didn't enjoy - bought stuff we didn't need - and came home to watch playoff games we couldn't have cared less about. I may just skip church this AM - and go take that hike... with my old SAK... and a handgun... and a GPS... and some 'power bars' and water... See what I mean?

Stainz

PS Obviously, I need to save on my electric bill and turn this and the 'tube' off...

Bigfoot
I had a vj , with a 245 auto , solid old rig , till I took it to the coast and it disolved into a pile of rust in a couple years

It sounds crazy but alot of times when I'm out hiking I don't really "need" to cut anything....when camping my axe/chopper/saw sees most of the work prepping fire wood...Last campout was in late november...I used my fiskars axe nonstop, I think in 3 days I used my folder 3 times. ( that being said I'd never leave it home) I think it's foolish to go out in t o the bush with out a cutting edge, but my recent revelation is that for personal utility that's allyou really need "a cutting edge" and for camp work something beefier... My new hiking setup is stockman folder (in carbon steel) and an opinel folding saw... If I get in to a sit where I might have to do a night I got my bases covered...If I'm out for longer than a day a larger tool will tag along.

The only place I don't go with my Opinel#8 is in the international airport.
I don't own a knife over 6" long for outdoor use.

Some of this sounds close to home. I have spent most of my time outdoors since I learned to open the door by myself. I camped, hunted and fished all the time. I hiked, biked and boated to the four corners of the earth. Never had a big knife, never needed a big knife and never wanted a big knife. Then the internet told me I needed all this BS and I got caught up in it. As someone else said, I have kinda come full circle and back to my senses. A four inch folder or belt knife, a Hatchet and maybe a small saw is all I ever needed. Oh and of course the SAK's. Most valuable tool on earth. Most of the time there is a big knife in the jeep but I have not needed it and probably never will.

when i was younger all i ever carryed was my sak camper it was all i needed but there were others with me so it was not the only knife at campsite

Usually a folder of some sort is all I carry on most hikes. I take a lot of trips to areas that have fire bans in the summer so a larger fixed bladed isn't needed for fire duty. I do like to carry a smaller fixed for food prep, whittling and defense against toothless bastards.
