I hope so. I've been carrying a folding Spyderco and a Ka-Bar Heavy Bowie on the trail. Both work but are not ideal for the job. I'm replacing them with an RC-4 and a small tomahawk.
You're gonna love the RC4. I bought mine for the same uses as yours. The only thing I didn't like was the sheath, so I made a leather one for it and it's now my favorite all around user.
CS Trail Hawk. Its cheap and does the job well. I hit the edge with a file and it will slice paper as well as chop wood.
I wrapped the top portion of the handle with paracord with the inner strands removed. Helps to protect the handle during a miss and it is comfortable for intricate work. It gets carried in D-Cell mag light holder on my belt, similar to what the police used when they carried those flashlights.
Just a factory pic. You could use a carpenters holder for a hammer, but they are more obtrusive when you remove the hatchet. This lays nice and flat and stays out of the way.
I carry the hatchet on my right side as that's where I carried a hammer for years. Knife is on my left. I use the hatchet on the trail more than a knife, so this works well. When camp is set up I usually move the knife to my right side and leave the hatchet in camp.
cool idea..my buddy used a mag lite D cell neoprene sleeve that had a belt clip on it...that worked even better due to if up ended the hawk would not come out....
