Hello all. I just pulled the triger on an Opinel #8 Carbon Steel with Beachwood. I've read and seen a 'bit about 'em on here. However I've never handled one. I love a good knife in carbon steel! I have nice patina and great convexed edges on my Cases, Barkies, GEC's, etc. I know this is an "inexpensive" knife, but what are your thoughts? How is the fit and finish, any blade wobble, good lockup, etc.?? I won't abuse it. I'm just wondering if I'm gonna get a nice sturdy cutting tool. Thank you all very much, Matt

I have the No. 8, and 2 paring knives for the kitchen. Had a No. 9 but gave it to my brother-in-law this past Christmas. The ease of being able to get a razor sharp edge on the Opinels are amazing. Just a couple of swipes on any stone type, I have found to so simple. My wife is actually "scared" to use them anymore in the kitchen. She has cut her finger so many times. As far a "sturdy" cutting tool, them may disappoint somewhat. A Bowie knife they are not. Often called a "Penny" knife. The larger sizes do come with a locking ferrule, even the No. 8. Just be sure to dry it off after each use, wipe her down with a thin film of mineral oil, she will develop the patina quickly,,,,and I believe you will be amazed at the razor edge "scarey" sharpness.

Welll people in france has been using this knife for a long time now. It was orginally a farmer's knife. Although it doesn't look like much, I bet it can be used well by those know to know to. I would use the heck of out if it. That's the only way to know if you like it or not. By the way, a lot of people mod the handle to get a better grip on the knife.

God Bless
