I just ordered Mr. Davenport's book from Amazon...can you guys give me your opinion about the book and what I'm gonna learn from it. My brother and I both want to take his course this summer....I'm trying to talk the missus into it. Living in Kodiak Alaska, it should be a prerequisite.

Thanks,

Greg’s book IMHO is the ‘101’ course book of survival. First of all, it teaches you to THINK instead of just following techniques. It explains the five essentials of survival that you have to meet. Also, it is very well structured and logical, focusing on the essentials. Probably, the best basic book I have seen. Do not expect description of fancy techniques, primitive aboriginal skills or exotic tropical plants. It is, however, going to teach you for the essential basics and to use your mind to get out of the ‘woods’.
Greg is a great person and the most active moderator of our forum. We are anxiously looking forward to his NEW BOOK coming out …hmm…this spring

. Right, Greg?

Hi Greg...

Hope you enjoy the book. HM, thanks for the feedback... the book was meant to be exactly as you described it.

My first book is based on my simple three Step Approach To Wilderness Survival (this forum has heard this theme from me before). It develops the "five survival essentials" for the person who finds themselves in an unforeseen survival episode. Example: skier, hiker, hunter, etc. The goal is to maintain life and to return alive. The goal is not to live long term in the wilderness (we'll leave that for my next book

).

The three step approach to wilderness survival is:

I. Stop and recognize the situation for what it is.

II. Identify your "five survival essentials" and prioritize them, in order of importance, for the environment that you are in.

1. Personal Protection (clothing, shelter, fire)
2. Signaling (manmade and improvised)
3. Sustenance (water/food ID and procurement)
4. Travel (with and without a map and compass)
5. Health (mental, traumatic and environmental injuries).

III. Improvise to meet your needs using both your manmade and natural resources.

The second book (takes off where the first one ends) focuses on wilderness living. A rough table of contents for it can be viewed here.

It is scheduled to be out this summer. I had planned on starting a third this week but have two trips that have precluded that from happening (one just below Mt Raineer in Washington and one just below Mt Shasta in California). Perhaps when I get back

HM summed it up exactly! You have to see the overall picture before getting into the specifics. I've built up quite a library of books over the years, but none comes close to Greg's book as a starter for survival techniques.
Greg has posted an incredible amount of information on the forum so any questions you might have about specifics is probably already answered. If it isn't then you can ask.

I have seen so many books on survival that pay no attention to the priorities of survival, and how to assess them based on your situation and terrain.

Greg's book was enlightneing and refreshing: you not only learn the techniques, but you learn when and when not to use them...

You learn, as was stated above, to use yer noggin as your primary survival tool...

You learn to think out of the box, leading to imrpovisation...

Also, so important, Greg's book has the single most cohesive chapter on navigation that I have ever read: You will learn more about it in this one chapter than any other book out there, IMHO. It is very clearly written and illustrated.

If fact, so is the entire book. I consider it the one book I would take with me on any trip, anywhere.

Best,

Brian.

You are very welcome Greg, although I thank YOU for writing it.

I have to echo the others it is a great Book. You will not be disapointed at all. As a beginner it was a great starting point for me and i refer to it often!

I just got the book today. I will read it and let everyone know what I think. It looks like it will be a great read.
