Just ordered my first GEC

Thanks guys, I'm really on cloud 9 right now. I just can't believe how nice these GEC's are. The second small blade isn't nearly as hard on your nail. I think I like the sound of the #72 not being as hard to open. I saw a pic of the one I want but I just couldn't find any for sale. It is a GEC with 440C blade and american elk handle. I think the model # was 721111.

The elk #72 is going to be a tough one... I believe they sold out in a matter of days.

Thanks 2Dead, that's just my luck. Always a day late and a dollar short. I guess I'll need to just pick something else in a 72.

Very nice. Is that one of the models with the UN-X-LD stamped into the blade or is it just an etch?

If you haven't tried it yet, flush out the pivot by oiling it and working the blade open and closed. You may be surprised how much gunk is in there. That should help at least a little bit.

Danny, yes this one has the blade stamped. Also thanks for the tip about the pivot, I'll give it a try maybe tomorrow.

I think you made an excellent choice with the #25 Barlow ( it's a very overlooked pattern IMO ) also I think GEC's snakewood is one of the most attractive handle materials they offer all in all you have excellent taste in traditional knives.

Thanks whetrock. I've been looking around at GEC knives since I placed my order for theBarlow last week and I would really like that 72 I talked about earlier with the American Elk handle but I've also got my eye on a #25 Easy Open GEC with the 440C blade and desert sand jigged bone. Actually found a few of these so that one may just be my next purchase. I'm really liking the size of the 25 and I planned to carry and use this one but the blade is just so darn hard to open. Hoping the easy open will help correct this problem. Thats also something I liked about the 72, the pull was easier. Who knows which GEC I'll end up with next? These "traditionals" sure get addicting fast!

I sure do like that #25 Gec you got there WE. I've been wanting one for the longest time but other GECs keep getting in the way :D

Thanks sappyg! I saw one and knew I had to have it. I just loved the look of the Barlow. You should go ahead and get yourself one, you WILL NOT be disappointed in the GEC. I just got my first one today and already can't decide on my next one. Like I said before I've never really been into traditional pocket knives but wow do these guys put out a quality product.

GECBarlowSnakewood.jpg

Ok this is my first time posting pics so I hope I did it correctly. Anyway got the knife today and it is everything you all told me it would be. Great fit and finish. The wood is very nice, it is the best traditional knife I've ever personally seen. I know this won't be my last GEC. Now my only problem is trying to decide which one to get next. I'm thinking a model 72 lockback. I know you also told me how "stiff" the springs on these things are but man you can't really know until you've tried one. The main blade is a real pain to open. Anyway guys sorry for the bad pic, cell phone is all I have right now.
Oh yea, that is a good lookin one. I was just posting on another link about the snakewood on the GECs. Nice score!

Nice. The stamped bolsters are my favorite!

I ordered one for my dad yesterday for Christmas. Spear main, Bocote handles, and the grooved bolsters (not the un-x-ld, but the horizontal lines).

Hope he likes it, or I will keep it for me!.

Glocktenman, I knew I wanted the barlow but I didn't know which handle material I wanted right off. After some searching I ran across the Snakewood and knew immediately that was the one. I like the look of wood on these traditional knives, to me it just looks "right".

Bigfattyt, if your dad appreciates pocket knives in the least he will absolutely love his present. Like you said though even if he doesn't its not all bad because now you have an extra present for Christmas.

Thanks peter Parker.

SVRIDER1, I'm really going back and forth on which one to get now. I REALLY like the 72 with the American Elk handle but I don't think I'm going to have any luck finding one of those so I think I'm going to go with an Easy Open 25 with a single spear blade with Desert Sand Jigged Bone handle. Not 100% sure yet, still thinking it over.
