Just ordered my very first Khukuri from Himaylan Imports...
I would like to thank my buddy Dan (Pendentive) here on the forums...for his advice :) Uncle Bill was also helpful in my final decision..:D
I ordered a Chiruwa Ang Khola, with a horn handle, I hope I made a good decision for my first khukuri!

Being that you're a knifemaker, we'd certainly like to hear from you when it arrives. Never heard about anyone who was disappointed. Oh yeah, it's unlikely it will be your last; just ask pendentive... :)

Welcome. Dan will not lead you astray.

Well, unless he wants the item you are interested in, then all bets are off.:)

Welcome, Roy. Nice to have you in the Cantina - Set yourself down next to the wood stove, kick off your boots, and toast your toes.

16.5 to 17"es seems like just about the perfect length. The HI's aren't up to American custom standards, but for genuine hand forged and finished, they're something else. Wait til you see the chiruwa's spine. I hope you find it has magic in it for you. The AK's and Chiruwa AK's to boot aren't my cup of tea. I like the baritones rather than the tenors ( Sirupatis ) or Bass's ( AK's ).

It may take you a while to assimilate or come to terms with a half-knife / half-axe in your hand. Especially if you think a quarter-inch spine is stout. 7/16ths or 9/16ths is gonna take you for a trip.

Ask dumb questions a lot, it'll help a lot of us learn stuff we haven't thought to ask about.
:p ;) ;) :D :D

I would like to add to the welcome aboard Rene. I have my 16.5" Chiruwa on a nail on the wall in my shop. It is there for my yard work. It is a work horse and can't stop chopping! I am very pleased with it and I'm sure you will be too.

Welcome to the Psycho Ward (as Yvsa calls it), Roy! :D

The chiruwa in 16.5" length is my favorite style. Pretty much unbreakable. I think you will like it alot. Be sure to give us a report after you've had a chance to test it.

Congrats!

Rene, nice pick...
You soon find yourself highly addicted like the rest of
us if your not already. It's OK though, it's perfectly
normal to stay on-line till 3am reading Khuk discussions and gathering as much info as your head can hold in one sitting.
HIKV takes its toll and the only cure is...we'll Uncle Bill doesn't
seem to have it perfected yet, so a cure wont be available for a while now. Don't forget to babble alot on the forum...The group hasen't told me to shut-up yet :D . In all seriousness, this is a great bunch of people...all knowledgeable. As for Uncle Bill, you won't find a better relative supportive of your disease.
welcome aboard.;)

Happy to see you over here in Cantina too Rene. YOu'll lovethe blade.

Better get cranking out more knives to pay for the other HI's you'll want soon enough. :)

Welcome Rene, I was like a little kid at Christman opening the package that held my first HI khuk. Don't be suprised if you get a similar sensation.

It's a pleasure to welcome a man with equally good taste in knives, and friends. Dan's a squared away guy.

I get that feeling EVERY time I get a new blade of any kind. Just wish I had someone else paying for them.:( Oh well, as UB says, debt is good.:D
Welcome to the Cantina, roycustomknives. You may find that our collective marble count is a bit low, but then again, some here have a higher than normal count.

Wow,...Thanks for the awesome welcome!!! :) Yes, I can't wait to get my new Khukuri!!! I picked up the Chiruwa Ang Khola because I liked the full tang construction...there's something about a big slab of steel...:D :) :p  I will let you guys know what I think of this knife after it arrives and I have a little time to play with it...By what I have read about these knives on this forum..I am sure I will be very satisfied!

Can someone explain the Lingo: Kami, Karda, UBBB's, JKM...WHAT?:(

Kamis are the Nepali bladesmiths. Kamis are part of the untouchable class in the Hindi caste system.

Karda is a small utility knife included with the khukuri, ahs it's own place in the sheath. Most khukuris come with a karda(the small utility knife) and a chakma(or chakmak, which is the steel used for burnishing the edge).

UBBB Is Uncle Bill's Best Buy if memory serves, or something to that same effect. These are the best deals around in theory, though some of the regular blemishes are a better deal than the ones he marks as a UBBB(though any blemish or UBBB is a great deal, while regular HI prices are only a realy really good deal :) )

Can't remember JKM off top of my head. It's one of the smaller knives, somewhere in the 6-9" range, but I don't remmeber what it stands for. SUre someone else will be able to answer tha tone

Rene?

Get Dan (Pen) to show you his "moose knife." It is lovely.

JKM-1
This knife was conceived, designed by the late James K. Mattis, one of the most respected members of the knife community, and is named the JKM-1 in his honor. It is a Nepali version of the Finnish puukko. About 6 inches in lengh, maybe 6 ounces. Excellent fit, finish and hardess. Comes with dangler scabbard as shown.
