Hi guys. I just picked up a meteorite at a gift shop last night and would like to incorporate it into some damascus. Its got some iron in it. A magnet sticks to it. That's about all I know about it. I could use some direction. I know there's a lot of work between space rock and iron I can include in a blade, just not sure what or where to look to learn about the process. Anybody got any thoughts on where I can find out?
Thanks,
Ed

If it has any 'figure ' ,Widmanstattin Lines ,they will be destroyed if you heat to get it into damascus.

Jim Hrisoulas also has a bit about how to do it at his Salamander Armoury site.
Apparently meteorite can be very red-short, i.e. will crumble under the hammer. Sometimes the correct heat is the answer, often the material is sandwiched between homogenous steels or onto a bar to gently work it into a rectangle for further welding and drawing out.
I'd research it carefully, in order not to waste your rock.

If its got the cool Widmanstätten pattern make an Inlay with it! I plan on doing this at some point when my skills suffice.

Yes, go for all the information you can I use a lot (?) of meteorite for bolsters and occasionally for a blade that has a D2 type cutting edge, but I know what they are. Seymechan, Swedish, and Gabion. They all have the Widmanstatin pattern and work reasonably easily. Seymchan can be difficult in that it often has many slag lines that will show bad defects or even cause the piece to fall apart. On the extraordinary side it can often have gold and silver included. Yes, I/m just a stock removing guy. Frank
