I thought Danner made a similar looking boot

Yeah they are USMC MIL contract boots (hot weather RAT - Rugged All Terrain... I think)... others besides BATES and DANNER make them too... I found the BATES are most comfortable and breathable - they do get more comfortable but no break in needed and you can live in them first day if you got the right size and lace them up right with good socks.
