This is what happens when you run clay down the center but harden before grinding. Edges are fully hardened but you get some funky hamon activity.

On the flats? Surface grinder finish.
 
That's what I was talking about - the funky swirly Q toward the tip. You hardened it before grinding? I just don't follow, maybe shoot me a text if explanation will be too long?
