Just purchased my first "brand new" case!

Got my first Case knife Saturday. Case Peanut in Amber Bone. Only gripe is the blades are not centered at all. :-( Not sure if I am going to send it back or not yet.

At least I know some other people encounter spotty quality control, mine dont have perfect centering either but that dont bother me tons. Are their any reports of counterfeits? Im not too concerned about mine but in case I ever purchase a used one off of ebay or such?

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger. Case's quality control has been very "hit or miss" lately. I've handled a bunch that I don't think should have left the factory. There are blades so far off center that they rub the liners and gaps so big you could pass a dollar bill through them. But when you get a good one, oh boy you have a keeper. Best to buy them where you can inspect them before purchasing.

Yea my trappers blade centering is pretty bad but it doesn't rub so I'm ok with it, the backspaces are pretty good. My buddy bought a sod buster jr from the same tractor supply and the fit and finish is disgusting. Big gaps in the back spring and horrible blade centering.

These are pictures of my trapper.

Because I don't want this to turn into a Case bashing thread, here's an example of a Trapper I purchased recently that I would consider good quality and well worth every penny I paid for it. I carry this one proudly... They can build really good knives.

What a beautiful knife. What covers are those? I'm not ranking on case at all, when actual humans are involved with the production for a reasonable price you can expect some imperfections.

Thanks, it just a black derlin handle mini trapper. Don't get me wrong, Case deserves to be called out for some of the crap they've let hit the market. If Rough Rider can have high quality control, then I'd hope one of the U.S.A's top brands could do the same. They need a little pride in craftsmanship.

I think you got one of the very best Case knives. For me, Case is synonymous with the trapper pattern. An old redbone Case trapper comes to the forefront of my mind when I think of traditional pocket knives.

The yellow knives are some of the hardest working there is and the price point lends them to use and abuse. One of the only trappers I’ve known, Frank, used the trapper pattern for its effiecentcy in the act of skinning. I remember he got an old Schrade 96OT for a little Amish boy trying to learn the trade. He showed him how to skin out a road kill coon with that trapper knife. Frank was a strange guy to spend his afternoon driving around looking for road kill.... anyhow, the trapper is great for everyday carry and will do most everything you’ll need a knife for.

Congrats on a good one!

I have a yeller full sized Case Trapper too. Have had it for a few years. I suspect I got interested due to one of these kinds of threads and bought one next time I was at the knife store. I bought a Case Peanut recently.... my most recent Case knife.

I was thinking about getting a peanut instead of the trapper. Im glad I got the trapper because my victorinox classic is always with me and im sure it can accomplish most of what the peanut can do.

I understand. But the Peanut is a stronger more robust knife. I would rather carry my Leatherman Ps4 Squirt with its small blade, but I mostly use the pliers. Almost always will have another knife in my pocket. The Squirt's blade is there as a last resort.

I went down to my local tractor supply a few weeks back and saw a trapper I liked. The employee let me open hold it and see if i wanted it but I held out. Well I just went back down and decided I wanted it. Behind the displays they keep the new ones in their boxes, so when the employe opened it and there werent any yellow trappers, I had the option to buy the display one, which I did. The funniest thing is I believe the tang stamp marks it as a 2014 model. This knife has been in that case for 4 years waiting to be purchased!

I asked if it was discounted since it was handled by previous customers (myself), but it wasnt, oh well lol. sure aint the sharpest knife I own (yet) , but certainly one of my favorites.

I have the same one. One of my favorite traditionals. I am a sucker for the yellow covers on Case knives.

I got this cv sodbuster Jr a short while ago. Awesome knife!

It is very well finished - except: there is one section near the tip where the blade rubs along the brass liner (on the non-nailnick side). The natural patina covers it well enough that it doesn't bother me all that much. Hopefully it shows up in the picture; there is a small scraped deposit of brass on the steel.

...Just a small cosmetic flaw. Some minor flaws just add a little character, right?

In the end, I really like this little knife.
Case makes my personal favorite carbon steel (it has a little more "depth" vs just a graying and smelly metal) - the blade on this one is no exception.

I have one of those yellow Delrin Sodbuster Jrs. I agree, it's a great knife. It has the best blade centering and F&F of all my Cases.

Ironically, it was the least expensive.

Luck of the draw, I guess.

Dan, I wouldn't worry about centering on a Peanut. The nail nicks are so shallow, and the little blades are so thin, they're gonna deflect and rub whenever you open it anyway. Just use it and enjoy it. Let the blades get patina'd (if you got the CV) and build some stories with it. I hadn't carried mine in a couple days, and I was glad to find it in the pocket of the pants I wore on Monday.

As for the OP, my buddy gave me a nice mini copperlock in smooth antique bone for my birthday. I'm not sure exactly why, but I never bonded with that knife, even with its cool bomb shield and threaded bolsters. So after a couple weeks, I traded him for a yeller handle trapper (he's started selling a few Case knives out of his shop). I couldn't get that trapper off my mind until it was in my hand. It's SS and I'd prefer CV, but I'm happy with it anyway. My ulterior motive is that I want to try my hand at modding it - remove the vestigial spey blade to make it a slim single with full size trapper clip, and rehandle in red homemade linen micarta. Maybe someday...
