And it's my birthday....................Yangdu shipped faster than I have ever expected.............

:D

A beautiful lil khuk..............by Bura............... :D

Congrats! What did you get? I got the 16.5 WWII by Bura as my first. Took me a few days to warm up to it, but after I stopped worrying about delimbing myself with it we got well aquainted. I get a very calm, comforting feeling from the blade, so that even though I was a little nervous swinging it around, I always felt that the khuk was looking out for me and wouldn't harm me.

At first I thought the WWII was huge, a monster of a knife. Now, I think "it's not THAT big...rather small, in fact." It's true, the khuk will skew your perspective on knife size.

Enjoy, and don't worry about being back for another. You will. :D

I got the 15 incher...........18 once Bura Special..............

As you said I am still warming up to it..............

graceful.........chopping sharp............but not shaving sharp............

but still I have to remind myself...............to respect it

Nice. Been hoping to snag 1 of the daily specials but I guess I e-mail too slow.

Looks down at his finger and thinks about that for a bit. :o

Congratulations. I'm glad you're happy with it. :)

Hi Astrodada!

Congratulations on entry into the "Exalted Owners and Members of Khukuridom." Sounds like you got a great knife, and most important, you're having fun...

It's a hoot, isn't it? Who'd ever think that a knife could be so much fun, or evoke such emotions? That's the Khukuri for you...

Take care, stay safe, and have lots of fun...

Carter

I'm actually getting a little happy about the khuk coming to my house. A FF blem.
I want to see if this khuk, at the low range of my own criteria for usefulness - really, 17" and 24 oz should be about the start of the real Working khuks, can do more than it has a right to do.

Carter- I see you hail from Maine. Good Khuk country it would seem.

Oh..........the mirror finish.............so nice........

Still debating whether I shall chop with it...........

I steeled my Khuk ! :o

now I know where the hardess part of the blade is.............

It's like........grabs............SLIPS..........grabs..........

Along the middle it grabs a little........then..........SLIPS at the belly.............then grabs more beginning 2 inches from the tip.............

I have managed to sharpen it a little.................only a little at the hardess part................... :o

Dang,
Maui's a Mainlander too.

>>>>>>

I like that- when you sharpen with a stone, you can feel the hardest part of the blade edge from the contrast with the softer steel next to it- which just grabs more.

I was a Maui boy when I registered with bladeforums in 1999--despite my 2000 registration date--long story. But alas I have returned to Maine as of 2000

I am thinking about doing little modifications to the Khuk already.................

Is that normal.........??

Yup, makes it yours.
Just be careful if you modify the handle. It's easy to take off too much and there ain't no such thing as a "Puttin on tool." ;) :D

Oh...........OK.........very fine grade sandpaper then.......say 600 grit alright ?

I am going to make the top part of the handle a little thinner (more oval)....

And i have barrels and barrels of parafinic oil here......(one low vicosity and the other higher).........which one shall I use.........? parafinic oil is mineral oil as the european way of saying isn't it ? Am going to use that on the blade...........maybe the horn handle too..........will the oil make the horn handle more slippery ????

Astro you can use 80 grit to start with or a smooth rasp or file, just be careful. The 600 grit would take you forever although it would be good to finish with.

Mineral oil is wonderful for blades but Boiled Linseed Oil, Tung Oil, or other finishes are better for the wood.
But mineral oil can be used on wood in combo with something else.
I've used the mineral oil with Ballistol as well as the boiled linseed oil with Ballistol. It leaves a shiny but not reflective finish that I really like for a a user.
If you want a really beautiful finish then the BLO, tung oil, or Tru-Oil will give you that with multiple coats.
The tung oil and Tru-Oil build up the fastest IMO.

Edit:
Do not use oil on horn except as a preservative!!!! Makes the horn way too slippery for use!!!!:thumbdn: :(
