I just received my RD6 from Brigadequartermasters and the thing is dull as all hell. It wont even cut a cardboard box. I expected it to be sharp after all I had read about ranger knives. I know I could put an edge on it with my edge pro but it should of came sharp according to Justin. Other than that it is a beefy knife. I like the feel in my hand. It looks indestructible. I like the sheath it came with it holds my multitool in the outside pocket great. I am going to send it back today. I ordered a swamp rat M6 last night so I dont need 2 6 inch tough knives. I am debating whether or not to get a refund or exchange for a RD9 and hope it comes a little bit better edge wise.Anyone else have this experience?

Did you ask Justin about sending it to him and having it sharpened, I am 100% certain he would.

My RD7 came in "child-proof mode", too. ;)

ok at least it isnt just me. I called him and he said he would sharpen it but I can do that its just I expected it to be sharp. He kept telling me just to strop it to keep the convex edge since it would be sharp. Oh well that my only complaint thats a pretty small one. I love the way it fits my hand. I will exchange it for a RD9. There is a 2 week wait on the RD9's right now. :(

Mine came really dull also, with a very thick edge. I'm still trying to decide if it's worth the time on the edge pro or just send it back...

hmm, from what I've read, if you order direct from the maker, you can request a thinner edge. I wonder how the flat ground, orange handled ones from sage are. If I get one, I want a full flat grind.

I got an RD9 and it was okay, not much work and could slice thru 2 liter coke bottles and multiple water bottles. The smaller water bottles would still leave the bottom of the bottle with water in it. I am thinking about putting it on the Edge pro and putting a really high grit finish on it.

WOW, If I sent back every knife I got because it wasn't sharp enough for me I wouldn't have any knives. Don't be such a wuss and sharpen the darn thing.

I didnt say I couldnt sharpen it and if you read my responses you would see I am not sending it back because of the sharpness. I am exchanging it for a bigger model. The RD9.I just wish the edge was a better. My SAK,Camilus,CRKT,S&W, even my Winchester came out of the box usably sharp. I still sharpened them but this one is totally unusable out of the box I find that sad for such a higher end knife. My swamp rat M6 is supposed to be here Tuesday. I wanted to be able to use it as I was told to by the maker which said stropping only to keep the sharp convex edge on it. Not that big a deal that I have to spend a few minutes on the edge pro but kind of a letdown from what I was told.

perhaps you should start buying better knives

My Ranger knife was a nightmare, with uneven grind, poor finish and a wavy top. He pretty much ignored my request for special features, but still charged extra for them. I sent it back to Justin and he did make it somewhat better. But, I was left with the lingering question of what else he may have shortcut in production, so I sold it unused. I only took a $40.00 loss.

I did read your posts and that was the impression I got but guess I was wrong. Fair enough sorry.

Really? Like what? Perhaps I should lower my standerds of sharpness instead. :)
Truthfully I’m very happy with the knives I get even though I put my own edge on them almost as soon as I get them.

From what I have observed from several post the Ranger knives that come from BQM seem to be duller and do not have as good fit and finish. Mine had a very dull edge and the grind lines were a little off. But I don't see very many complaints from knives ordered from Sage creek or directly from Justin. I don't know if it is just my imagination or not but that is what I have observed.

I noticed that too doing a search almost everyone who got a dull knife came from BQM.Fit and finish was fine though. I just mailed mine back to BQM. Might order my RD 9 direct from Justin instead and ask it to be sharp. Wonder if he would mind sharpening the back side of the tip as well or if it would weaken it too much.BQM said over a 2 week wait on RD9's. Might as well wait on Justin direct.

I got RD6 and RD7 full grind and orange G10 handle from Sage Creek and have no problem. Even now after some random use RD7 cutting cardboard (I did not resharpen it yet).

Thanks, Vassili.

i purchased an RD7 a few months ago directly from Justin. he is a nice guy and very courteous but truth be told when i got the knife my first impression was "what the hell is this?" i was very sloppily ground and it was very dull, mishapen in certain areas also.
i have gone through a bunch of knives and this one was by far the dullest.
i really believe that these knives are being kicked out really fast whithout proper care or attention to detail
i ordered this knife because it was bragged about alot on this forum but i will never buy another rd6 7 or 9 again.
after a week i got rid of it and 2 days after i saw the guy had it posted for sale at a 30 dollar loss and it took him a while to sell it.

I ordered an RD6 from Justins web page and when I got here is was so dull it would not cut paper. So, out comes the Nicholson files and I re-profiled my edge to a slicing profile. While re-profiling the black crinkle coating started to flake off also.

I have it sharp now and don't care about the flaking black stuff, however, before I would order another knife from Ranger, I would surly talk to Justin to make sure he knew just exactly what I expected upon receipt. It it arrived otherwise then I would send it back and have him make it right.

FWIW
Ciao

My RD9 was dull as a turd as well. The edge was only sort of formed into blunt convex shaped object. The grind was/is very uneven. The Micarta was sharper than the blade.

HOWEVER...... It is a great big chunk of really tough 5160 mostly shaped like a knife. So I took the micarta off and rounded the edges. Took a sanding wheel and knocked the sharp edges off the finger cut outs.

Then I finished the edge, thinned it a great deal and put a highly polished convex edge back on it.

Then I chopped some REALLY hard dry wood for 20 mins and the edge was perfect. Great chopper, TOUGH blade. Resists impact damage like you would not even believe.

Pros:

1. Cheap
2. good materials
3. If you have time and materials you can finish the knife and have a good tool
4. Cheap
5. Nice sheath
6. TOUGH blade

Cons:

1. Takes a lot of work to be called a great tool
2. Takes even more work to call it a knife
3. NOT Cheap if you value your time
4. Finished like a cheap tool
5. Edge is to damn thick. Unless you want it to crack concret blocks

So in the end I called Justin and ordered another knife with a custom thinner grind and a Satin finish. So I guess on balance I must have liked it. Sure impressed my father in law when I cut down the old dead walnut tree with it.

He could not believe it still had a edge.
