just received Ranger RD6 kinda disappointed

My experience with Ranger knives is different. Both knives I got was sharp and I did not have any problems with them at all. Blades were great, G10 scales were also perfect and I had and have nothing to complain about.

And I agreed 5160 great tough steel hard to find in production (seems like ony custom maker using it for ABS competition knives), orange G10 - great handle, flat Grind on pretty wide blade, Busse design I guess, at least Busse like. Most important it is very inexpensive.

I easyly sharpen it my way - using diamond 1 micron powder to perfection (and honestly I did not expect any manufacturers doing this to me).

And I am pretty happy with both RD6 and RD7.

Thanks, Vassili.

I recently received an RD9 directly from Justin and it was as sharp as a marble. The blade was not straight either. I spent about 4 hours with a Gatco course stone - medium - fine before I finally recognized it as a blade. I don't think I'll ever get it straight though. Oh well it'll go into the pickup as a tool like my wrenches and tire irons.

Well I guess I am in the minority here...I just recieved a RD9 from Justin and couldnt be happier with it...Would shave hair right out of the box and I plan on ordering several more from him..

I agree with what Cliff said...IF it wasnt right, why not send it back?

like I said I was a little disappointed but am still trying to get hold of an rd9 if that says something. Those knives are built like tanks for the price.

That's certainly true. You do get a lot of metal for your money. Just make sure wherever you're going, you're willing to carry all that metal with you (unless it's a truck queen). ;)

Well, Ranger knives are great! Especially I like RD knives.
Streel is spring 5160 - toughest you can find, and used a lot on competition knives.
Like cutting rolling ping-pong ball, cut 10 plastic bottles etc.

Of course the factory edge is for general use, but I able to make it very delicate on this knives. So for me prce/value of this knives is just unbelivable.

Compare it with this one:

Thanks, Vassili.

Thank you very much Dude!

But did not you cut down the old dead walnut tree with RD9? Can you do same with some other knife for same price?

Let see what the difference?
- steel same 5160 - spring steel, very togh
- shape same
- I doubt edge thickness is much dfferent - after all on competition they have to cut hardwood dowels.
- flat grind on both blades
- handle just a bit different, champ has bit grippy but it is for extreame cutting during competition, for regular use - casual cutting it does not matter too much
- "special" heat treatment... Well, Justin is in knife bussiness for a while and know how to HT well known 5160 steel, I doubt that difference between what he doing and what Cammilus may do huge on that production knife - this is very well known for decades steel. After all again you did cut down the old dead walnut tree with RD9 with original heat treatment.
- so the difference is only price $450 comperad to about $100.

I just resharpen it my way without any regrinding (as I think you did) and very happy with it. I may put my own handle on RD6 - make hidden tang, use exotic wood, just as an exesize to make it almost same as the champ. But I will not do it for RD7, which is pretty good.

Thanks, Vassili.

There is probably a large issue in how the knives balance due to tapers on the Camillus reproduction and how they cut as the edge profile is much thinner on the reproduction. However a user can adjust the RD9 and rehandle it, after tapering the tand and even adding a pommel weight if necessary. Justin would likely do that on request as well.

It seems more trouble than its worth to send it back unless you really don't like the knife. It takes minutes to sharpen, but much longer to repack and stand in line at the post office.

I would write a letter and send it directly to the manufacturer and tell them in no uncertain terms what you think about a dull knife. You are correct, a knife should be sharp out of the box.

I just received my RD9 directly from Justin last week. I spoke to him over the phone and discussed a different type of edge other than the standard convex edge he puts on them. Since this knife is to be used mainly as a chopper, he suggested to leave the standard convex edge as is. The knife arrived fairly sharp although nowhere near shaving sharp. After lots of chopping of various types of wood, I was amazed at how well the edge performed, and how well it retained the edge. Silly as it sounds, it actually felt sharper than when I had received it.

Good point Brian and it merits repeating the steel in these knives is top notch.
Once you get sharp and if you can over look the kinda crude execution of the design they are fine.
