I’ve built another of my Just Right Bolos! This is a Bolo design that just suits my tastes and needs for a large chopper/camp knife. I’ve used some of my usual 5160 with a differential heat treat. The blade is 1/4inch thick and cold blued. I’ve added a little bit of a swedge to the blade tip on this one. The black G10 scales are attached with epoxy and flared stainless steel tube fasteners. The sheath is is made from 1/8inch thick gray Kydex and will accommodate a large size Tek Lok. I ran out of my usual Boltaron so I reached into my small stash of the heavy duty stuff 👍

By the way, if you are unfamiliar with Bill Siegle’s work, he makes his blades by hand one at a time. So even when he repeats a pattern, which is rare, there will be small differences between his knives. The steel is usually zone tempered 5160, and his handles and sheaths are practical, sturdy and comfortable. You may find prettier knives, but if you intend to use it, Bill’s knives are a hard to beat.

picked up a chopper from bill a few months ago and would definitely recommend.

His grinds are uniform, surprisingly thin and far exceed choppers from Busse / swamp rat in chopping and cutting. The heat treat must be spot on because I gave it a good test and it held up very well and touches up nicely.

Balance was nicely split between chopping and general use and the fit and finish is basically perfects. Handle urgoes are decent but my particular knife had flat scales and gave me some pinky shock, I’ve got somewhat wide hands. I’ll add a few wraps of tennis tape and I expect it to end up very comfortable. Almost forgot about the wonderful sheath which is literally perfect.

A couple weeks ago I fell and split an 8” snag at a mountain lake for an fire and didn’t feel under gunned without my pack axe. He puts together an excellent package.
