Just rubbed one out

Here’s a knife I just finished. I gave this one a nice smooth 600-grit hand-rubbed finish on the blade so it would look a bit cleaner than some of the simple belt-finished knives I’ve made lately. Hand-rubbing is slow and tedious work but it does look nice when it’s done well. Strangely enough, though, when I told the wifey I was headed out to the shop to rub one out the other night, she looked at my kinda funny, then just rolled her eyes and walked away. I guess she prefers a belt finish…

The handle on this one is made out of bone micarta scales held on with epoxy and slightly flared stainless steel thong hole tubing. You don’t even want to know what the wife said when I started talking about my thong hole.

The flats and edges still retain a forge finish and provide a nice contrast, both in color and texture to the hand-rubbed blade. Forged from 1/4″ 1084 carbon steel, the thinly ground blade is 5″ long and the overall knife is just shy of 10″. This one’s quite pointy, and VERY sharp. Much like my wife…. :D

Thanks for looking. As always, comments and critiques are welcomed.

Oh, and if you're bored, feel free to check out my new website and blog -

Some knives, some blacksmithing stuff (including my latest Barbecue / Battle Fork), some musings, and plenty of nonsense. About what you'd expect from me :)

I was going to say Derrick, don't think I want to see this. But it looks like you rubbed out a good one. This could get much worse and I think I will take the high ground, well at least slightly.

Seriously, really nice knife. I like the contrasts and the bone micarta. What is the steel?

Excellent work.

The internet is perhaps not the best place for ill-conceived comments. I mean what I say, and I say what I mean. If it had been me, I would have just ignored the "lame" (my daughter's words) references to the wife - but my daughter (a collector) took exception and suggested that anyone wanting to sell a knife to a woman should look elsewhere for a maker. Just sayin'...............

I'm not quite sure what exactly it is you're "just sayin" there, but you'll be relieved to know that my wife was standing behind me chuckling as I typed those tongue-in-cheek comments above. She's my biggest supporter, and frankly, she's all I need. :)

Thanks to the rest of you for the kind words. Brion, the steel is Aldo's 1084. I've grown very fond of this steel. Makes a great cutter...

Then my daughter will be relieved to know that it's all in fun. Oh, and we both like your knife.

Very good looking.....downright elegant in it's aparent simplicity...like
it could be at home at just about any task.

I thought that is what it would be Derrick. I am with you on Aldo's steel. Really quality stuff and it does make an excellent cutter as you have shown.

Good job.

Yes, so nice.

Very nice work.
Really like the contrast between refined and rough forged finishes. Kinda "Elegante de Forge"

I knew what you were talking about because I'm so innocent to think otherwise. Nice hand job. Love the contrast from super smooth and forge finish.

Derrick - that is really well done - beautiful and funtional. I have to say I like it an awful lot.

Really not all that shitty, Derrick. :D

Ok, serious comment now. I love it. Looks really nice.

Thanks guys. I do have to say I like the way the colors and textures came together on this one.

har har! That's some funny stuff right there Bruce.

Bob- really man? C'mon!

Nice job Dick:D:thumbup:

I like the different textures/colors, handle, flats, and bevel finish.

Thanks for the humor; sometimes it's to serious around here.

That is very nice sleek and clean ready to work and it looks like it will work very well.
