Just saw LOTR - Return of the King

Just to resurrect this thread, I saw it last night and WOW! The beginning was very well done, the 'journey' bits were great and unlike many mobies of books which loose some of the meanings of the originals the film actually expanded on some! The Battle at Plenor fields was fantastic, the last battle was brilliant and the scenes on mount doom were great. I loved that look on gollums face when he fell, said a lot really.

Actually, having said all that, I find Sam and Gollum to be the two most important people in the trillogy. Gollum, well as Gandalf said, he did have some important part to play, he destroyed the ring. Sam, has anyone else noticed that all the other major characters were tempted by the ring (except merry and pippin), they looked at it and acted as if they wanted it, on the other hand Sam had it in his pocket and he handed it over, no problem. At the end of the film, he was the only one who had carried the ring who did not go away. Intresting eh?

I loved the movie as well, and think it is probably the best of the three. I think Sean Astin (Sam) should be nominated for the best supporting Oscar. He epitomizes the character and is the most "human" of the bunch.
Andy Serkis is great as Gollum, but the Academy refuses to nominate him because he has CGI modeled over him.

If you read the appendixes of the LOTR you will note that Sam did indeed eventually go to the Grey Havens - After Rosie died and his children were fully grown.

I enjoyed the movies, but I think they cut far too much out of them. I have high hopes for the extended edition of the ROTK. For example, they completely neutered the confrontation between Eowyn and the Lord of the Nazgul. Their statements to each other should have been more than what was portrayed in the film. "Don't you touch him," and "I'm no man!" just didn't cut the mustard for me. The dialog from the book made the scene so much more ominous and of greater significance.

As a matter of fact, the movies also completely wussified the Rohirrim. Achh... Don't get me wrong. I liked the movies. And I'll preorder the extended version of the RTOK on DVD as soon as it is advertised. But the way they portrayed Aragorn as trying to avoid his destiny rather than as a great chieftain of a noble group of exiles biding his time to assume his rightful place as king - and making Theoden so weak and whiny, and complaining about Gondor, and that "what is a man to do in the face of such naked hatred" line at the battle of Helms Deep... It may sound sexist, but I could tell that women had written the screenplays.

Wow, I'm a geek.

I went and saw the Return of the King the 2nd time today...

Can't wait for the extended trilogy release...
