engineering department, I sent an email to the customer service area last night and I got a very personable, detailed and informative email back from there engineering and design department. I asked them why the kabar heavy bowie has a flat grind yet there other large blades are hollow ground and believe it or no they gave me a pretty good answer.

they informed me that machetes are meant to cut light vegetation (we all knew that) however there machetes are short (11 inch blades)
they use really thick stock so the shorter blade can gain momentum, and they claimed the hollow grind provides the best slicing action for light vegetation, and that people looking to use a heavy knife for wood working should look into the heavy bowie....I don't know if I buy the Hollow grind being better at bringing the thick blade through vegetation, but I was impressed by the thought process that went into making these things, and by the smart and quick response I got from them.... In fact I just got another heavy bowie..
I did email the back however and suggested that they might in fact design another heavy use blade with nice flat grind.

Tell them to release a Heavy Bowie II, without the 1.5" choil, and I will sell my other bowies!:D
