I'm 40 yrs old next month and out of nowhere I got hooked on knives and collecting like a madman!! I go from edcing a $25 kershaw clash for 10 yrs to purchasing 14 knives in last 6 weeks...wow. I never saw this coming and I always used to scoff at a knife costing more than $50. Is there hope for me or am I doomed?!!

Similar happened to me a while back. Always had a few cheap knives here and there, quite a few Leathermans, Kershaws. Then a while ago it just kicked in full force.
I’ve got too many other expensive hobbies and didn’t need another one!
Luckily the quantity and frequency of accumulation has started to slow, but the prices have skyrocketed.

No hope man.

Same here, an old 3 blade Schrade, a few Gerber and Kershaw folders and Buck fixed blades sufficed fine for 30+ years. I bought my son a ZT0920 for his b-day 2 years ago, then got myself a BM CLA. Now I'm up to 8 ZT's, 4 Bm's, 2 Hinderer's and a couple mid-techs, not to mention all the other eye candy that I just can't seem to resist. Starting to look at customs, I'm doomed.

My wife used to bug me about my gun 'obsession', now I'm selling/trading them off for knives and she thinks it's cool. She's ended up w/a couple pretty sweet slicers herself, in fact yesterday she got a new ZT 0609 purple sprint run and a Kershaw Dividend M390 for a 'paring' knife for mothers day. She was flicking watching tube last night :)

Echoing the posts above: you’re doomed unless you get a grip on yourself and take control of what you’re doing.

I started ~11 months ago with a $150 Spyderco PM3. I burned through the Spyderco/ZT/BM zone pretty quickly, my tastes got upgraded quickly and so did my average cost/knife. I’m now north of a couple dozen knives, which include Reates, Olamics, CRK’s (all upscale ones--no PJ’s) and Shiros. I realized I needed to put the brakes on a couple months ago, so I stopped buying more knives like there’s no tomorrow and as if the cost didn’t matter. I’m doing well with my new self-control kick, but I do miss the enjoyment of online research, shopping and knife buying.

Good luck with your situation.

Doomed my friend

DOOMED!

Looking in the crystal ball, I see you as a 72 year old man. Your activities have been somewhat curtailed by health, so that there is absolutely no hope you will ever actually use many of those knives for the purposes which you used to justify buying them. You know that your heirs could never extract all of their value when they dispose of your estate. You know that you should begin the process of liquidating them now (the knives, not the heirs.) Yet you can't bear the thought of letting go of most of your treasures. You actually prefer to give some of them away to meaningful people in your life rather than sell them. You've set out to select the ones you could bear to sell, and so far have identified about eight out of 150 or so, but haven't put them on the market yet. And, you are still happy as can be to have them!

At least that's what has happened to me.

Just bought one Shiro yesterday looking for an Olamic, this is outta control, but one advise I can give you is, buy one or two a month that are worth it instead of 10 regular knives, good luck

I went through the binge phase in 2013/14. Got married and broke in 15. Got broke the same time. Had to retire due to medical issues in 16, as well as got divorced.

Now, no job, disabled, living at home, just turned 40. Still buying knives, though less frequently, but higher quality.

Last year I purchased 1 knife, a Vic super tinker.

This year, a Massdrop Ferrum Forge Gent select and a WE Deacon. Not sure what's next? Don't know.

After an hour and 20 min drive home from PT/OT, I've 3 songs battling for dominance in my head.

Judas Priest's The Sentinel, White Zombie's Thunder Kiss '65, and Godsmack's Straight out of line.

Cowboys from Hell is on the same playlist. I recently introduced my 5 year old nephew to metal, that song in particular. He's hooked. I'm terrible.

First of all Welcome Op. Second, you are asking a bunch of Knife Nut enablers if you will be Ok  Lol. I suggest you do lots of research when you see something you like on The Tube or the BF Exchange, That is half the fun to me and it cost nothing and can save you a lot of $ when you learn from others mistakes so use that search bar up top right hand side of this page. That said I suggest that you grab your wallet and RUN! ......................

Not doomed, just hopeless, there is a subtle difference ;)

I just related a similar thought to friend, that this 'habit' unlike alcohol or drugs which you consume what you get, with knives you still have them and find yourself having to now sell them in order to get yet ANOTHER knife fix, it is truly a vicious cycle and one I may never find a cure for, I call it the steel virus and it is epidemic and growing :)
