Just throwing an idea out there for a product...

As some of you may know, I'm a big fan of the XlTi, however there are a few refinements I'd like to see on the design;

1. Straighten the clip out, like on a Reeve Project 2.

Concave clips have there greatest advantage when fully sharpened and used for delivering backcuts. On a folder this size they just remove steel unneccesarily. By giving it a flat rather than concave clip you still get a fine point, but you also get to keep a little more steel.

2. Add a lanyard hole.

These things are just pretty handy all around, and since I wear my folders in the fifth pocket of my Levi's between my hip bone and belt, a fob would be helpful for drawing the knife.

3. Thumbstud mounted close to the base of the blade, like on the Gerber Applegate Combat Folder.

As I have said, I see thumbstuds and bladeholes as niceties not neccessities, and I like this knife just fine without them, but it would be nice to have one. I'd want it close to the base of the blade so it didn't get in the way while slicing. I don't like bladholes because you have to have a hump that makes the knife fatter or you lose too much steel.

4. New coating for the black model.

I like black knives as much as the next guy, but the powder coating that is presently used is weird and I don't care for it much. On the knives I've seen it looks kinda sloppy. Maybe an oxide coating, or heck, Buckcote(sp?) instead.

Anyway, I heard that if there was sufficient intrest expressed in such a knife that it might make it into production, so I'm just throwing this out here. If you like it, e-mail Buck, it might get made.

I've always liked my Buck folders, and I think the XlTi is one of the best Buck's made. Just a few points I'd like to see refined.

Last I heard, the XLTi was on the chopping block. DC'd this year.

I can understand that as the sales on them are really poor. I carry them but hardly ever sell one and that's too bad. They are really nice knives.

Snick, your mods might do the trick on turning them around but I think it might be too late. Buckcote would definitely enhance this knife, BTW. I saw one that had been done up in a rose colored titaniun nitride coating that really looked cool. It was also the hardest of the coatings that they were trying. I think the reason that it didn't get used was the color was just too funky for that kind of knife.

I think that if the knife was done in a flat black TiALn, with your suggestions, and PROMOTED PROPERLY, (are you listening CJ?), it just might do something. This was one of the first knives in production with the titanium handle and should be leading the trend instead of just watching it go by.

What I would REALLY like to see is one of the "takedown" models that was held together with screws. It's a shame that it isn't around any more. I should have gotten one when I had the chance a few years ago.

Lessons learned.......

I think you've got it, DW.

But, I think BUCK will drop the ball once again, I'm "afeared".

Yeah, making it into a one hand opener would be a big plus, a pocket clip would REALLY finish it nicely (IMHO). Maybe this model with some of our suggestions, could live on in the Custom Shoppe ?

Incidentally, Snick, Buck did make a 110 style blade with the type of clip point you mention. It was in the ill fated 110LL.

They tried to make the 110 into a locking liner knife and blew it. It was a nice looking knife and, I thought , a great idea. The only problem was the execution. I wish they had done a better job on them. I guess they only made about 500 and quit. I think they realized that it was more of an undertaking than they were prepared to do.

I bought a half dozen of them two years ago and still have two left. But they did have the flat clip point though.

Whenever you find a product that you really like a lot, weather it be a knife, toothbrush or whatever, be sure to but two of them, because they will surley discontinue it!

I would like to see a drop point offered like the kind used on the Selector models, with thumbstuds of couse. -Brian
