Just wanted to say thanks

Could be that the previous owner messed with the spring tension on the liner. I dont know.

Yeah that could be too. Wouldn't have said anything cause figured was just the last owner but couple others said they had the same problem too so was thinking theres something to that. Will carry it next couple weeks and see if it will break in more as others said. Though looks like it already is but how knows. Might send this baby in to get fixed.

I never understood why people spine wack their knives. When would you ever do that?

I will answer your question. The people who spine wack their knives, the reason is usually because when you do this kind of "test", you need to confirm yourself that you dont have anything better to do. :D

Try waving it out of your pocket a few times. Whenever I've gotten a new Emerson, the lockup has always been very early. One of them would close with slight pressure if opened and locked slowly, and after a few waves, it's settled in to where the lockbar is fully engaged on the tang with about 40% more to go and hasn't moved since.

I don't get spinewhacks either. That's like using the wrong end of a hammer to drive a nail to see if the handle is strong enough.

That's good to hear and wish i woulda said something sooner. That's what was happening here too closing with slightest pressure, but bad blade alignment too. Had no idea about new Emerson's needing a break in period. Like some guns i guess. Haven't carried it much so the probably done the wave thing about 30 times taking out of pocket. Will do it a bunch today and see what happens.

Ulf Krogstag, just curious but what year is your Horseman?

2013. Looks like it was used a descent amount too so don't know if it hasn't been broke in yet or abuse from last owner/owners or what. Gonna eat lunch but will come back and show pics. Thanks for all the advice. Wish i woulda said something sooner.:o

Was thinking about just starting a new thread but since the details of problems already said on this one here's some pics of it. Anybody see anything I'm not?

Lock looks solid just off centered. Either your pivot is so loose that you can fling the blade open or you need to adjust your detents.

The slipping is much better than when i first got it took it down a couple time and tried different things and this was the best i could get it. Lock slips with only a good amount of pressure now. Tightened and loosened the pivot just about everyway that i could. Moved detents too. Too tight lock slipped and too loose lock slipped so is some where in the middle right now more tight than loose. Don't keep pivots loose on any of my blades cause just creates to much blade play for my liking. With lots of force can get blade to flip out but mild attempt gets half way out. Not the biggest deal in the world. Just thought i'd chime in since others said they had the same happen. Tried moving the pivot out more and tried too push the liners more together before tighten too and i can't even remember what i did to get it where it's at now but better than before. Had the pivot very tight to where takes effort to deploy blade which worked to but it's at it's best right now since i've had it. Might be taking a trip to the factory if it gets worse. All and all not bad otherwise like the handle, the wave is something never tried and am liking, like the chisel grind, the Emerson clips are the best i have had on any knife. Doesn't slip and is extra wide which i like. Gonna use it more like others have said to maybe break it in and see if anything changes otherwise probably going to the factory soon. Thanks for your help.

Something's not right there. It looks like there's too much gap between the blade and non-locking side, like the washers are different sizes. The blade should also be centered if everything was lined up right. With the lock disengaged, how does the blade feel moving around the pivot?

I can tell this much. That knife has been put through its paces. I don't know if the previous owner abused the knife or not but that lock should be More Than settled in. I agree on the whacking thing. It doesn't make sense. One can use any reason for it or try to explain why but it is plain abuse of a knife.

Everyone in here except noobies know how to check their lockup and cracking *The Back of the Spine of their Blade* - just isn't the proper way. I'm sure EKI will square you away if you choose that route. Good luck.:-)

Your right. There is more of a gap on the non locking side. Washers are same size though. Maybe there the wrong size for the knife though or something? IDK. Might take down again tomarrow though shouldn't cause fairly descent right now compared to way it was.

The bigger washer is on the lock side and the smaller washer is on the non-locking side. There are ways to center the blade - tightening down the pivot, putting pressure on the blade towards the side it needs to go. For you it would be towards the locking side. Then tightening down the body screws.

Other than the outer and inner diameters of the washer, there is also the thickness to consider. Emersons use a 1/4" inner diameter washer that is 0.030" thick (+/- 0.002"). A common modification is to replace the single 0.030" Nylatron washer with 2 PB or Nylatron washers that are each 0.015" thick (2 on each side). Maybe this was done, and a washer was left out during a reassembly/tune-up session. Looks like we are getting close to the cause of the problem though. If upon inspection, you find that the washers aren't up to spec, let me know and I can send you correct ones that will work. Or, maybe EKI will send you replacements.

Ah man. Your making to many good points for me for me not to check that out will take apart tomarrow and take close up shots of everthing, Thanks:thumbup: I might just start a new thread to cause feel like a A-hole for cluttering up the OP's thread. :thumbdn:Sorry
