To the Damascus makers among us:

How many of you would be interested in .065 1075 for making Damascus?

A very common mix is 1084 / 15N20 , and a good one . Hey, that guy Aldo makes that steel. Those two steels have very similar HT proceedures and the nickel in 15N20 makes for excellent contrast !Easy to forge too ! So those are all the important qualities necessary. I'd prefer the higher carbon over the 1075.

It would give an even layer with the 15n20 since they are both relatively the same width. Not much of a difference in contrast over 1084 though.

Sounds like 15N20 and 1075 would play together well. The guys with big presses and power hammers can make a stack 3" tall and have 40 layers in a fold.

Thats what i was thinking Stacy, maybe not quite 3" though :-) It would give a larger layer count quicker and easier for we who do smaller sizes. Starting off with an 8 layer (1/2") billet vice 5 layer.

I would try some. Can't guarantee large regular orders though.

If you had some made, maybe you could make the manganese content really high so that it would etch really dark. That way you would be known for your awesome low manganese 1075 for sweet hamons, annnd your awesome high manganese 1075 for sweet lookin, high contrast damascus  ;) Just a thought!
