Just wondering...

So, I like knives. I use them in some sort of way everyday, though most are razor blades at work. But I like a variety of knives. Unfortunately for me, I like better quality tools in general, this is no exception, and it's more of the thrill of the hunt than actually having the knife. Once I get it, what do I do with it? "Carry it!" Right, but then I want another one.

What do you all do with your knives? Do you display them? Just look at them? Or, do you carry them all in a rotation?

At this point, I have ended up with 2 BenchMade folding autos - one I like, the other not so much. I'll be looking to trade off or sell one, and keep the other.

On a related note, has anyone ever heard of a guy named John Miller from NH? A quick look doesn't seem to turn up his name. His knives are some of the ones I feel compelled to acquire, given his skill VS price point.

That is unfortunately the nature of the beast, at least for me. I have aquired far more knives than I actually can justify in buying. I do like some more than others and they get carried more, but I doubt I'll ever sell any so the less favorable knives rarely get carried and sit in a drawer. However, I have started to get a lot more "choosy" in what I buy and tend to buy more "obscure" knives.

I have all my knives (around 23) sitting in drawers in my night stand, but only regularly rotate 8 or so. The rest get fondled from time to time and then once in awhile get to be carried for the day. It makes them happy.

Oh and welcome to the forums.

Welcome.
Benchmade is a great company and an excellent start. But.... there are more.... and even better out there just waiting for your credit card! It never ends. There is ALWAYS something more shiny that gets your attention!

Usually store them and have about 4 in my rotation but carry about 2 a day. Every month or 2 i will sit down and switch out the least used in my rotation

I started out with a Benchmade 910 and carried it for years, then a Chris reeves popped up, it's been a downward slide from there, but it has been a fun ride.

Welcome to BF. There are as many answers to your questions as there are BF members.

Since no one blade profile is ideal for every task, I prefer a multi-blade traditional.
I carry mine.
My normal daily carry is a Buck 877 Maverick fixed blade, Buck 112 Lil' Jack from SK Blades, and a large stockman, all in a sash sheath, plus a SAK Huntsman (on a 32 inch chain lanyard) in my pocket.
Sometimes I'll put a Buck 110 on my belt next to the sash sheath, too.
Some days I'll mix it up a bit and add a large Sunfish, or a Half Hawk, Barlow, Trapper, or some other knife to my pocket to keep the SAK company.

I have about 60 folding knives and rotate about 40 of them. I have a few favourites, but I make sure I use most of them.

Take photos of them and post on the forum :)
I try to get them into the rotation, but some can be hard. They are just so nice.
At this point I have cut down to rotation knives - a modest 7 folders and 3 fixed

Interesting replies....and about what I was expecting. At least this is an active forum. So is there anybody else that gets off on the thrill of the chase, and the acquisition, but then gets immediately bored as soon as it's in your possession?

I try to carry one most of the time. Then when I see something new I try it out and see if it bumps my current edc.

I switch up my carry pretty often. Most of the time the newest arrival gets carried until one day I decide to switch it up again. Then the newest knife gets tossed into my strange rotation. I mostly go off of how I feel that day. Is it a traditional day? A modern day? CruWear day? So many variables that I don’t even know what’ll be in my pocket until I walk out the door. There are times when I know I’ll be better suited to a particular knife ahead of time, though I do mostly just wing it, haha.

As for displaying them.. the ones I carry the most usually sit on top of my dresser next to my most worn watches. I think have about 8 sitting on it at any given time. The rest usually rest in their box until I decide to carry one of them.

I don't know if I would say bored with the knife once I get it, but I certainly can get wrapped up in the chase

I invent reasons to buy them. Then invent reasons to carry them. Then I invent new reasons as to why the one I bought isn't quite up to the task (it generally is). Then I buy another one. And so on and so on and so on for 30+ years.

I usually go through spits and spurts as to what I want to carry and rotate accordingly. Big tactical folders, fixed blade belt knives, etc. I'm currently carrying a Kershaw automatic because I convinced myself that a 3.75" blade launched out of an aluminum grip and held in place with a button lock is more prudent than a 3.75" blade propelled by ball bearings and held in place by a frame lock...for some reason. I forget what I told myself. However, I'm enjoying my new knife.

I think I feel the siren song of the traditional slip joint calling. Time to look over the GEC catalog and see what need I need to invent in order to plop it on my Christmas list.

The whole endorphin rush is a normal thing. Worse if you have an addictive personality. That’s why kids go bonkers for all the little toys out there now. Once they open them, they play with them for a few minutes and move on.

Same with many of us... checking tracking info every 5 min, running to the mailbox as soon as a knife is delivered, etc. People do the same with flashlights, guitars, wine, baseball cards, etc.

In any case, my favourite knife is often the last one I received!

My grandson is 5, every time he sees a commercial with a new toy in it, he says he wants it. I laughed at myself because I do the very same thing each time I see a new knife. The difference is, I don’t have to wait until Christmas.
Some I use, some I just admire and never use.

LOL, I must have an addictive personality, then. Glad I never got into drugs or alcohol. The way I see it, drugs and alcohol would take away from buying other cool, things. But to make it worse, I also tend to like quality, and even more so the things I at least perceive to be hard to come by. Once I have them, I tell myself that I simply can't use it because it's very hard to replace. Never mind the fact that it was made to be used. Several years ago, my state got rid of all it's knife laws. So now, I have 2 expensive autos for no other reason than they're cool. This shows up real bad in my other hobby, fireworks. Woodworking, not so much, and guns, not so much.

If the thrill is gone, then so is the knife. I may not look at a knife in my collection for a while, but if I look at it and I don't feel moved, I'd sell it immediately.
