how many of you folks grew up carrying a knife..... no, i'm not talking about fishing on the weekends with dad and grandpa... i'm talking everyday....:)

i have been a self-proclaimed knife nut, just about as long as i can remember.... and yes i was one of those kids, that always had a knife, sometimes 2.....:D

i started packing a blade (EDC) when i was in THIRD grade...:D lets just say, i grew up on the other side of the tracks... in a not so nice little town, which has grown a ton over the years....:o

what about you guys....

I remember getting my first knock off SAK when I was in the first or second grade. I always had one with me as a kid except for school because it was forbidden. I would carry one in my pocket at all times and felt naked without one. I still feel I need to have one on me for everyday utility and in case of an emergency.

I, too, was one of those kids who always had a "Boy Scout" type knife in his pocket at all times.
If out camping-hiking-hunting, then I had a belt fixed blade on + the folder in the pocket.
I can't imagine not having a blade on me when I put on the pants in the morning.

I had a knife since I was old enough to drive a car around the farm , since I was 6 or so I think .. but it was only carried at home .

I began carrying everyday in high school , against rules , been carrying everyday since then .

I was given my first pocket knife when I was 6. Very happy to say I still have it and cherish it greatly. It is a Camillus "Boy Scout" knife and pappaw called it. Your basic blade, can opener, bottle opener, awl and such. It was sort of a production when he gave it to me.

He called me into the living room and had this knife with a black shoe lace tied to the lanyard loop. He proceeded to tie the other end to my belt loop with it just long enough for me to reach full arms length with it. The idea is that you won't loose it that way, and I never did. I carried that knife every day from that point on until in my early twenties I bought a Case version of the same knife as I realized that I wanted to give this old Camillus to my future first child. Of course I grew up in the country in NE Tennessee. Spent many a day in the woods fashioning spears and various other impliments with that knife.

The knife was shaving sharp when it was given to me (pappaw's theory was you would cut yourself with it but you would learn how to handle it. He also hated dull knives, an obsession which I inherited). Boy, that Camillus will take and hold a wicked edge.

I look forward to the day I can repeat this same ritual with both of my daughters. My oldest, now 3, every morning tells me she wants a pink knife while I'm using whatever kitchen knife I happen to be using at the time.

Great thread.

I seem to have always carried a pocket knife though I can not remember when I first got one. My friends and I used to play 'chicken' and 'stretchy' a lot but it was mainly used properly for carving and woodcraft. I used to spend days on end sharpening it in Junior High's shop class. No one complained and it didn't seem unusual to be carrying a knife at school.

I first got a knife when I joined the cub scouts. Got the (I think) Case knife. That thing stayed attached to my hip from then on.
Never even thought to ask if I could have it in school, and no one said anything if I took it out to open something or whatnot.

I have had a pocket knife since 3rd or 4th grade ,I am 35 now so I have been into knives for a long while...and I am passing this disease on to my son, LOL!

That I can recall I've been carrying a folder EDC since I was about 12. I had other pocket knives before that but can't remember any one in particular that I carried as a general rule. I do recall a Barlow knife that I used often in the woods behind the house every time I went out there.

At some point in my early childhood my brothers and I all bought these sheath knives that said "Original Bowie Knife" on them from Woolworths. They had a cheap leather sheath and wood slab handles. They were balanced for throwing and the shed door took the brunt of that.

Having a knife of some sort was such a normal part of growing up in rural Pennsylvania that I can't really recall when it started for me. Mac

I don't know how old I was (maybe 10?) but I fell in love with Swiss Army knives first. I had a little brochure showing different models stuck up next to my bed and I would lie there dreaming about all the different models I would own one day.

I have owned knives pretty much consistently since then. However, my 'hobby' really got into gear about two decades ago when I discovered Spyderco's and the like.

I too have always carried a knife. When I was about 8 my aunt married a cowboy from Utah who would tell me stories about the west and how a man never went out without a knife and a gun and he gave me my first knife. Didn't get a gun until I was about 17. My mom wasn't too happy about my carrying the knife all the time but it never stopped me. To this day I never leave the house without one and the last 4 years it has been my Fox River.

I bought myself a SAK Huntsman when I was twelve and have carried that knife or another daily for for the past 25 years.

My granddad gave me a barlow knife when I was about 6 or 7. I proudly carried that knife till my dad gave me a new Camillus scout knife when I joined the boy scouts when I was 12. Hard to remember that far back as it was about the time steel was invented. :D

Hey Mike..

I carried one for as long as I can remember as well...

Even have one of the very first knives I had as a kid..Picked it out of a rubbish trailer that was headed for the dump..

There was about 3-4 years as a teenager that I didn't carry because I was doing alot of drinking then and was constantly in fights..

I did get a knife taken away at school each year..Only didn't get two back, which were switchblades.
Also got a push dagger taken away when I worked at the police station by the deputy chief.. :)

Never carried one at school. But every other time. I grew up in the woods, so I had to have a knife.

Yes. The way I grew up, it would have been very stupid to not have a blade at all times. It's a tool and it's a weapon. I knew that early on.

I too had the little blue Cub Scout knife from early on. I used to have these utility shorts that had a clip so I could attach the knife. I also received a "tool" set as a kid which included a 4 inch fixed blade, a pocketknife and a little axe. I still have the tiny axe in a fishing kit somewhere. I spent a TON of time in the woods as a kid, building shelters and searching for the lost world. (Watched Land of the Lost as a kid). Bought both my sons their first knives at about age 7.

Always had some kind of knife. Carried a switchblade in junior high. Never thought much about it. Everyone else carried as well. My how times have changed.

The 1st I remember carrying is the Camillus cub scout knife at age 6-7. Since then it has been a rare day when I don't have a blade with me. And yes I lost more than one while at school. Never thought of my pocket knives as weapons though. The chucks were for that. About 12 I went through a phase where I tried almost every style of knife that came out. Lockbacks, SAKs, "survival knives", ninja knives, etc. etc. Most all were CCC POS and didn't survive long. Through it all I never gave up my SAKs. I knew of Vic and Wenger and would have nothing less. Even got into a fight or two because I felt my Wenger was better than someone's Vic.
BTW: I had an official BSA Wenger that I unfortunately lost over the side while at sea:mad:. If anyone has a line on one, I would appreciate letting me know. Thanks.
