Someone here posted about making bunddles of Jute dipped in wax for firestarters. I cant find the thread...

anyways, not to steal their fire idea, but here is my version of a jute firestarter

i call it the Jute Bomb!

take one Coghlans "firelighter" stick (sawdust and giant matchhead) and wrap many times with Jute, then fray the end near the match head. Dip the whole thing in wax and let dry.

I use mine with a firesteel and PJCB placed on the match head, a few sparks and the PJCB ignites, wich lights the waxy Jute, which ignites the matchhead (flares up quite large) .

i have'nt dipped this one in wax yet, cant find my wax melting pots......

i did make a video on me tying these up, complete with soundtrack by punkers Raised By Apes, but Photobusket wont let upload iut, its too large .....

There is another way to use it.
Instead of the firesteel and stuff, just strike the match in the middle the usual way and it will burn for a while. It looks like some kind of "get the fire burning quite quick" thing.

Possibly an up and coming pyromaniac. That thing is a bit large for starting only one fire but does look like it would work. Love to see it in use. Lighting a fire under emergency circumstances can be one of the hardest skills to master due to the loss of fine motor skills ability when going hypothermic. Therefore this would be a good idea especialy if you came up with a pull start ignition method.

Jack London wrote a great story about that, called "To Build a Fire"...set in the Yukon around 1900.

And Hey! I just found the whole story online ...good read:

This is one of the things I most like about this site. I hadn't read that story since about the 7th grade. Great find! Thanks for sharing it.

To the OP... did you have any luck getting your video on YouTube?

Heck, they look like they'll fit right inside an empty 12ga hull (cut off the brass) and seal the whole thing in wax. Makes for an easy to keep, store, travel method.

Thanks for the idea, now I'm going to go experimenting...
