K J Eriksson VS Frosts

My order was waiting for me upon arriving home from work on Wednesday; just five days from the placing of my order! Kudos again to Ragnar on his prompt service.

I had a chance to examine them in detail this morning, and test the edge of each knife out of the box on news print. I noticed quite a discrepancy in the group, with only two of the six able to slice cleanly through the news print without dragging or hanging up while attempting my cuts. Those were the Mora 2000, and the 731. The 2000 was extremely sharp; actually very, very sharp!

Less that a hour with a fine DMT stone had them all cutting to my satisfaction. The two 510s needed the most attention; one in particular was a bit troublesome. Although nothing more than a little work with the fine DMT was required on either of the two, they were easily the dullest of the group, unable to slice news print before a little work with the stone.

The two 946s required very little attention to have them both cutting like crazy.

I'm very impressed with them all, but will readily admit, I'm a bit surprised at this extreme variation in comparing the six that I received. I can now see why there are conflicting reports from others that have tried them, it's really hit or miss whether you will receive your new knife "scary sharp" out of the box. To me at least, half the fun of owning a knife is keeping it sharp, and I would never present one as a gift unless I was satisfied with its edge.

I wonder how many perceive the quality of a knife by the edge it has "out of the box", this is really a shame, because with just a little tender loving care I had them ALL shaving sharp!:)

Any of the knives you have listed above I would buy without hesitation! Yeah, I have got a few not shaving sharp & had to spend a little time getting them up to snuff. I have got my share of USA factory knives not shaving sharp as well. I think its a small price to pay for a great knife IMO.

Hi, Treadwell .... was wondering just a while ago if you got your knives and how you like them.

Factory edge is unimportant to me so long as it isn't badly damaged. Like yours, the Frosts and Erikssons I've had varied quite a bit, but unlike a lot of American brand production knives I haven't seen any where you had to do a lot of work just to get down to good metal.

Interestingly the Frosts laminated woodcarving knives I have were the least sharp from the factory .... I suspect the Swedes figure the people buying their knives know how the sharpen, and particularly woodcarvers are going put a very fine edge on their knives that the factory probably couldn't consistently match even charging a great deal more for labor.

I'm hard pressed to pick my favorite. One of the 946s in hanging on my belt right now; it fits perfectly in the Marble's sheath I used for the Tri-Flex before receiving one of Eic's upgrades. The 2000 is even better than I'd anticipated, quite a nice surprise; it looks like it's going to be a durable and useful knife, one that will serve me well for years to come!

Please don't misinterpret my post. I'm thrilled with them all. I just wanted to emphasise that just because a knife doesn't arrive shaving sharp, it doesn't necessarily have a "direct" correlation to its quality!

I COULDN'T"T BE HAPPIER WITH MY PURCHASE, AND I"M TEMPTED TO GIVE THE DEER HUNTER ON MY LIST HIS TOMORROW AS A "EARLY CHRISTMAS GIFT".

For sake of accuracy I want to mention .... I stated above that "The only Eriksson carbon steel blade I've used is a model 911, the steel in this one doesn't compare with the Frosts laminated or Eriksson stainless." Apparently I had left a bit of a wire edge on this one or it just needed some additional sharpening. Anyway I just finished another round of edge retention testing and this knife did extremely well this time, actually outperforming both the Eriksson stainless and Frosts laminated blades.

Hope you'll give us an update, Treadwell. Be interested in your thoughts now that you've had some time to use the knives. Any favorites emerging?

All of the blades pictured are from ragweedforge, all arrived promptly and shaving sharp. I tend to gravitate to the Ericksson due to the slightly thicker blade, the 510 most of the time.

ive used these alot, and id say kj over frosts any day, higher grindes better cutters, however take a close look at the frosts clippers.. theyre good
