K390 vs 15V for EDC

The only 15V I've used for any length of time is a Para3LW in 15V and while I will NOT say I'm disappointed or anything actually negative I also can't sing the accolades that some 15V users have been. It's not chipping out or anything else negative, but it's not showing off all the vanadium carbide content like I thought it would be. Not saying I thought it would wash my dishes and tuck me in at night. I just thought maybe it would keep that hair popping edge longer or something. I don't find it more earth shatteringly different. Maybe I fell too much for the hype. That and K390 is a bit of a miracle steel in the first place.

I was told that 15V does stay sharp a lot longer than K390 unless you abuse it. But that same guy told me that it won't chip, but will microchip on hard use. It'll still cut paper and be sharp, it just loses shaving edge faster. That also depends on way you sharpen, he convexed his but still says that after contact with bone (sliding across, not hitting into) for example K390 had no noticeable dulling, while 15V lost some of that sharpness, even with convexed edge...

Anecdotal evidence, but there it is.

He still prefers 15V over K390 because of tons of cardboard he's cutting. But he does admit that he did have minor edge problems after hitting staples with 15V, while K390 had no visible changes.

My use is fairly different as I usually just open stuff, cut zip ties, hard plastic, food and similar stuff on daily basis.
 
Why not waiting a little bit for a Magnamax knife? You'll get the toughness and abrasion resistance of K390 in addition to excellent rust resistance.
 
I've hit copper plated steel box staples with my K390 Delica and while there was edge damage it was very minimal. I keep a ceramic rod in the office and some laps back and forth and the glint in the edge was gone. Besides the ceramic rod a few times, that edge is still otherwise factory. As in I normally use a Worksharp guided diamond plate system and haven't felt the need yet with that one.

I've not yet hit anything bad with 15V. And it's not dull but I guess I just expected better. But I should also confess back in the day with all the K390 talk of it being the "M4 killer" and such I also expected to be blown away by that as well. And at that point I didn't have much experience with M4 since I kept hearing it was a rust magnet. So I had been sticking with stainless. Now having used all of the above I feel like you have to be using expensive knives to shred a constant flow of cardboard (why on earth?) or be in the terrorist business of cutting mooring lines setting ships adrift to wear out an edge fast enough to worry about sharpening.

My feeling is with modern "super steels" we're so spoiled with edge holding that unless you're trying to wear that edge out you likely won't see that big a difference. Or at least I don't.

I'm not into stainless steels. I only got MagnaCut last year, and it's a small fixed blade, and I even got it with purpose of it being my saltwater knife. It did that job perfectly, and I have no need to get another saltwater knife.

MagnaCut is also awesome, but not as they initially said (like stainless 4V or stainless CruWear)...

I'm sure that MagnaMax will be amazing, even it really will have performance of K390 - it just isn't what I'm after. I don't want stainless K390, I want K390.

Jokes aside, I think we are all kinda too spoiled by all this selection of steels.

I should feel lucky that I am even able to ask question like this "K390 or 15V?" as back in the day even if knives in such steels existed, they'd be out of my reach in multiple ways. I'm lucky that they exist and are affordable enough and I'm standing well enough to be able to afford any of those.

And then on top of that existence of MagnaCut and now MagnaMax too... we really should feel lucky.

I've carried both longer than some people have been members here.

The k390 predates the use of the 15V in the knife industry. So obviously, I was a big fan of it and it's what led to me working with 15V.

I've certainly noticed over time the a11 class of tool steels has shown an extraordinary level of strength, stability and edge toughness for what they are when heat treated, processed and sharpened appropriately.

The 15V has always represented an extreme of that with the additional 5% carbide volume. 15V also being at the absolute limit of vanadium that can be commercially produced by a steel company since 18V and 20V weren't able to scale up from lab melts.

The 15v is less reactive when carried over a long period of time.

I have a k390 pm2 that I didn't use as much as the 15V Manix 2.

In my experience, the edge came up crisper on the BBB 15V vs the production K390 and I could push lower edge angles with more stability. The caveat though is that bonded Diamond and cBN is key to unlock the highest performance but the reward was you could sharpen when you want to not because you had to.

Once the extreme sharpness died off it could rest on its working edge for quite a long while which then could just be maintained with diamond/cBN compound on loaded strops for an extremely long time.

A note, most of the mass production k390 will trend softer than the 15V.

I'm not trying to change the op's mind on which is better.

You can't lose when you're making a decision between those two steels.

Both are very enjoyable.

Jokes aside, maybe that's why I'm personally not seeing the shock and awe behind 15V. And I have one of those old Police models in K390 with the G10 scales and wow what a pocket sword. I should get the latest FRN model but it's too big to carry at work so it would see little pocket time.
 
I sharpen everything with diamonds for a very long time now. I even have spyderco triangle diamond rods for my serrated K390 blade
Me too...and more. LOL (But I don't sharpen everything with diamonds.)
