Hello, new to the forum. I was thinking about purchasing a brass Mercator K55K knife. For some reason the simplicity makes it appealing to me. But I did have a question about the lock back mechanism. Does it use a tension bar or does it just just use tension from the handles to give the lock bar tension? Thank you for any answers.

Welcome to the forum. I just looked inside my Mercator and it has a bar-type spring like every other lock back I've had. It's a classic design with great history, you'll enjoy it.
Thanks for responding. I found this knife tonight and fell in love with it. Never could find a video on YouTube to see how that back lock worked. I appreciate answering the question.

There are a few classic knives everyone should try to own at some point in their life:

Swiss Army Alox Pioneer

Buck 110 Folding Hunter or 112 Ranger

K55K black cat knife (not all of them are black, you know).

The one I'm looking at is brass and doesn't have the K55K on it. It has the Otter logo.

Great, simple, slicey lockback. I don't display my knives, but I've seriously considered putting together a wall hanger with some of the simple, elegant, classic knives from various cultures. A K55K would definitely be included, along with an Opinel, patada, higonokami and a number of others.

and also in copper! really would like to see this with patina on blade and copper... if anyone has one, post the pics please

wow...a clip?! My jeans back pockets could have used that years ago....well, another knife to buy...it will go great with my Trapper Lock with Clip...can do my own thumb stud...

There was a thread on Mercator two weeks ago which lead me to get one,had one 30 years ago.forgot what a neat simple knife it was.hooked up a clip to the lanyard bail, carrying it as a second edc. theres a cool video on youtube of the factory and how they make the knives.

my new clip version arrived today.

WAY overbuilt/stiff, and also likely the very worst clip ever designed.

BUT, with tension eased by sliding it onto notebook backer to protect handle, and jamming med screwdriver under it....then removing to file rounded the front tip horns (yes, they put horns on the tip) and tweak that end down a bit using taped large needle nose to hold, and med adjustable to bend ...

Reinstalled and rides completely forgotten on rear pocket...just PERFECT....hard to find a flatter and sturdier 3.5"...no more bottom of pocket and horizontal...

definitely one that if you lose it, you don"t find out until needed or home, and watch that washing machine, flatter by far over a Delica and longer blade closer to Endura length...

love this thing. so slim you cant tell its there, and I carry a second knife next to it.Sharpened it so it slices paper.Going a bit old school without thumb lugs flipper or bearings.
