I've been looking forward to this for awhile...and I was surprised to see it come out in san mai.
Overall Length (inches): 6.75
Blade Length (inches): 3.19
Blade Material: Carbon San Mai w/410
Blade Detail: Plain Drop Point
HRC: 58-59
Thickness: 1/8 in.
Handle Material: Carbon San Mai w/410 (stainless for corrosion resistance)
Carry System: Glass-Filled Nylon Neck Sheath
Special Features: Skeleton Handle
Weight: .15 lbs
The flat grind necker came razor sharp, but i gave a few strokes on the strop anyways. The styling of the carbon san mai is a la Kershaw's composite blades. I like the look of it.
From the top, you can see the sandwiching of metals with the 410 stainless sandwiching the carbon.
Although the sheath is kinda bulky, it snaps in there good and snug with no rattling. There are 4 smaller holes for a special belt clip and the bigger ones for thicker cord.
I didn't find the blade heavy around the neck at all...just a little clunky.
It would be better for some to carry the necker in a mercharness. I'll probably get an IWB loop and alternate between IWB and neck carry. But using what I had, a neck chain, the necker was slim and comfortable for pocket carry and IWB static carry. I placed the chain through the small holes near the sheath opening so it didn't move around too much while IWB or pocket carrying. BTW, the necker came with some really freakin' long cord...just threw it in the pack for lashing stuff.
Overall fit and finish is good. It feels great in the hand, but i wish there was some jimping. The edges around the handle are smooth and contoured enough to not irritate. The only place that's really not that smooth is at the point (at butt) that's used for bottle opening (which came in handy for opening a bottle of Killian's). Also, the grind looks a little uneven near the tip. Not glaring, you have to really look to notice, and is easily fixed. Actually upon further inspection, it looks like Kabar thickened the tip slightly which makes it look like the grind is kinda off...hoping someone else can confirm when they get one.
I'll have to do an update after using and carrying it around for awhile to see how the san mai holds up to me sweat.
