I've been looking forward to this for awhile...and I was surprised to see it come out in san mai.

Overall Length (inches): 6.75
Blade Length (inches): 3.19
Blade Material: Carbon San Mai w/410
Blade Detail: Plain Drop Point
HRC: 58-59
Thickness: 1/8 in.
Handle Material: Carbon San Mai w/410 (stainless for corrosion resistance)
Carry System: Glass-Filled Nylon Neck Sheath
Special Features: Skeleton Handle
Weight: .15 lbs

The flat grind necker came razor sharp, but i gave a few strokes on the strop anyways. The styling of the carbon san mai is a la Kershaw's composite blades. I like the look of it.

From the top, you can see the sandwiching of metals with the 410 stainless sandwiching the carbon.

Although the sheath is kinda bulky, it snaps in there good and snug with no rattling. There are 4 smaller holes for a special belt clip and the bigger ones for thicker cord.

I didn't find the blade heavy around the neck at all...just a little clunky.

It would be better for some to carry the necker in a mercharness. I'll probably get an IWB loop and alternate between IWB and neck carry. But using what I had, a neck chain, the necker was slim and comfortable for pocket carry and IWB static carry. I placed the chain through the small holes near the sheath opening so it didn't move around too much while IWB or pocket carrying. BTW, the necker came with some really freakin' long cord...just threw it in the pack for lashing stuff.

Overall fit and finish is good. It feels great in the hand, but i wish there was some jimping. The edges around the handle are smooth and contoured enough to not irritate. The only place that's really not that smooth is at the point (at butt) that's used for bottle opening (which came in handy for opening a bottle of Killian's). Also, the grind looks a little uneven near the tip. Not glaring, you have to really look to notice, and is easily fixed. Actually upon further inspection, it looks like Kabar thickened the tip slightly which makes it look like the grind is kinda off...hoping someone else can confirm when they get one.

I'll have to do an update after using and carrying it around for awhile to see how the san mai holds up to me sweat.

Hey Derek 24......

Thanks for the nice review!!!!!

A couple of notes...The SAN MAI will only be used on the first couple of thousand NECKERS .... the next batch will be 1095CV........I recieved one of the first off the line production protos today and it is verr nice.......The 4 smaller holes which fit chain so well are actually there to fit KA-Bar's belt clip which is a very secure little unit and are available now.....The new NECKERs are a touch thicker and are ground all the way to the top in order to maintain the same blade geometry....The steel in the new BECKERs is 1095CV which is indistinguishable from 0170-6C....KA-BAR does a slightly differrent heat treat protocol which drops a point or two of hard and gives a large bonus in mechanical strength....The blade still has execllent edge retention .....Am headed to northern Ontario next week and will do extensive field testing on the production proto....Thanks again for your post......
All Best....

Hey MacGregor...

First somebody has to teach me how to post pictures and stuff.....I am old and am most comfortable with tools like hammers and other things with no moving parts or electrons.....but soon come..I hope.....

all best....

Hi Ethan,

Thanks for the clarification. Great, looking forward to the results of your field testing!

Yee- hah!!! gimme! gimme! gimme!

Is it realy 1/8 inch thick? Old Necker was 3,8mm thick(~5/32 inch), as fair as I remember.

I can see that handles have bevelled edges - will standard model be the same? I don't like the new sheath, it's ugly and too big in my opinion.
I like the full flat grind and arced grind endline. Looks nice.

Idaho, i just measured it at 4 mm...actually a pinch thicker than 1/8 in. A little beefier but still a great slicer.

Hi...!
I'm new here. I just ordered one of these fine knives from the 'bay last night.
(( No auction- or deal-spotting. ))

Hey Guys...

Paul at Ka-BAR informed me that the 1095 CROVAN is in fact different by the addition of 0.25% Ni, which in fact makes it VIRTUALLY indistinguishable from the 0170-6C....
The CROVAN Blade thickness will be 0.165 in. nominal......I got enough new NECKERs today to play a bit and will start doing the german thing to them as soon as I can find a large hammer....I have high hopes as I took a Ka-BAR impact series blade to PWYP last spring(same steel, same thickness, same heat treat) and drove it sideways into a tree about an inch and several truly brave souls did pullups on it and the blade showed NO plastic deformation whatsoever.!!!!...same blade stock thickness BUT, full tang and therefore, perhaps a little stronger....I have used my older NECKERS for years and have used one to split out kindling for hundreds of fires without blade chip out and that is the comparatively weak kneed stuff....Will be back in touch....

All Best.....
