Ka-Bar Becker Necker San Mai Review

I got mine today. It is the Carbon steel 1095 version. The blade is a bit thinker than I thought originally.

The factory edge isn't that sharp out of the box. But with a lottle touch on the sharpening rod is fine.

I think I like the original version better because of that it is slightly thiner. I think thin is good for sliding. Especially this small knife, the cutting performance is more important.

Anyway, it is still a good knife. Very durable. However, it would be much better, if the knife is 2/3 thiner than this.

Hey surawut....

Just a wee note ...You will notice that the new NECKER is ground all the way to the top and the old NECKER had a spine...We did this to ensure that the blade geometry stayed the same and that the good 'slice" of the original was maintained...I really liked the original and have been using the new one almost every day and have found no functional difference... I hope, after you use it a while, you will feel the same...Please let me know.....

All Best...

im getting one of these (1095 version) for Christmas and I cannot stinking wait! Thanks Mr. Becker for such an outstanding knife.

Mine just came a couple of days ago. Overall, it's a great little knife. It doesn't feel like a small (neck) knife due to its thickness. The only thing that doesn't appeal to me is that the handle has lots of hot spots; sharp edges around the handle.

Is there a way to attach para cord to it? I'd love to see a pic of one with para cord wrapped around the handle.

the hotspots were getting to me too, so i wrapped some paracord on it...

Hey Derek and harkamus.....

Nice wrap job....I always prefer the feel of a flat wrap....I usually take the guts out of paracord to do mine, but i am not as neat as you are......

Yes, harkamus, that thing on the end will open a premium adult beverage.....

All Best....

Is there a way to sort of criss-cross weave the paracord to give more of a grip feel so that the holes in the tang aren't so open? I think that would feel better in my hand.

I have seen paracord wrap done that way. Basically you start with the handle of the knife in the middle of the cord, bring the two ends over, twist them around, and pull them back around to the other side of the knife and repeat, until the whole thing is covered.

I really hate to post any kind of negative feedback because I absolutely love my Becker tools. My necker csm shipped with a pretty dull blade and a semi blunt point, there was a tiny bit of a point on it but not much. After using it on a coconut the edge was reduced to a point where it couldnt do much of anything to a piece of paper. Also there is a smaaaaaall but substantial nick in the center of the blade.

When I get my sharpmaker (Im still a nub at sharpening) I will touch it up a bit and evaluate it further. I fell in love with the design of this knife and it seems to feel right even in my big hands. I also like how thick the spine is because it allowed me to really apply some extra thumb strength into what I am cutting/carving.
