A month ago I purchased my first KA-BAR Becker. It was the large bowie. It snapped in half, from spine to edge. It only lasted 6 strikes while batoning. I was given a full refund and purchased an Ontario SP10. I try to by knives built in the USA. I love the SP10. It is a bull of a knife. But I have decided to give the BK2 a chance to earn a spot in my pack. I am an,avid camper and backpacker. This fall I will start going out on solo excursions. So I need my knives to be ogre like since that is my mentality. I am admittedly hard on a knife because I am a large man and need a knife that can live a hard life. Wish me luck on my new purchase.

Now, how about you guys give me your favorite mods for this knife and the sheath.

Thanks and I always appreciate your opinions and knowledge.

Happy dirt time,

My favorite mod for the sheath isn't much of a big deal. I removed the nylon dangler thingy and ran some paracord through the holes in such a way so as to be able to wear this one horizontally across the front (my preferred carry for the BK2) or vertically if I choose.

Another reason why I'm keeping my big old slab Brute. I beat the hell out of it and can't kill it...You spent your money well on the BK-2 buddy.

I'm with GingivitusKahn, although I only like to keep my fixed blades horizontally. Another think I'd do to the Becker BK-2 is add some stippling or grab a micarta handle. I like the extra grip and the look of it.

What knife broke? You mean the Becker BK-9 ("Combat Bowie")?
If so, first I ever heard of that.

Or maybe you mean the discontinued Large Bowie, which was Ka-Bar (but not Becker)? But it wasn't US made, so confused which knife you mean.

It was the large bowie. I have since surmised that it was the only "bad" knife KA-BAR produced. It did have the engraved Olean NY stamp. So I am surprised you mention it was not made in the U.S. Now after seeing BRab's brutal testing of the BK2 I feel confident that I have a superb tool arriving tomorrow.

P.S. The title refers to the BK2 not the bowie but I thank you for pointing out that I said Becker bowie in error. You are correct. Hope that clarifies the confusion. I am a KA-BAR and Becker newbie. My background is with OKC knives along with Mora and ColdSteel.(yes the last two are not USA manufactured, hence my venturing into the KA-BAR line)

I don't understand what you mean by this. The bk9/7 combat bowie is a great knife, but you got a fluke it seems. The design is good though. I'm sure it Isn't the only bad knife (fluke) made by ka-bar. Im not saying this to be difficult, im just curious as to what you meant.

I think you guys are talking at cross purposes. The OP broke a KaBar large bowie *not* a Becker BK9.

Irecently bought a BK2 with the aftermarket Micarta grips included - they went on before I left the store! Here it is with my older RAT/now ESEE RC-5:

I loved the RC-5 - but wanted a 'bug out bag' knife, thus the BK-2. Now I am confused - great knife!

I have the Ka-Bar "large heavy" bowie, # 1277 (9" blade). Mine says KaBar on one side and Taiwan on the other. I was unaware they made any here, assuming we are now indeed discussing same model?
