Im thinking about using one of these blades for a backup. I work SRT so the knife does not need to be concealled. I chose these two knives because of there characteristics. However, if anyone has other knife suggestions I am always open to more suggestions..

I'm not a police officer, and I'm not sure what SRT is, but to me the BK2 is a bush/wilderness knife. Unless you will be spending alot of time in the woods I'd not get the BK2. You might want to look at the Becker BK3 that Ka-Bar makes.

SRT as in Search and Rescue Training? It depends:

I think that the Gerber LMF ii would be best in an urban setting because of its window punch and its serrations make quick work of any rope, cordage, or things to be cut. It has a great sheath that is molle compatable and great retention. The serrations would, however, get in the way if you are battoning through wood, of which the BK2 that does not have serrations would make quick work.

The BK2 is a beast when it comes to camp chores. Battoning through wood and light chopping is at what it excels. The BK2 is called the CAMPanion for a reason.

Urban: Gerber LMF ii
Outdoors: BK2

The LMF II is a very heavy knife. If you're leaving it in the car/truck, it's practical. I don't even carry mine any more because it almost weighs more than my empty pistol. The knife itself is decent though, but large and chunky.

SRT generally means "Special Response Team" or SWAT. I wouldn't want to carry a heavy BK2 all day. If it was just on your belt or plate carrier for entry and stored in the trunk most of the time, then it would be a fine tool to use as a sharpened prybar at times. Otherwise, I'd go with something smaller and lighter. I've attended plenty of entry/CQB classes over the years and have never needed a big knife for any of the scenarios.

Cold Steel's SRK would be a good option. I wouldn't go with either of the two you mentioned.

If I had to choose between those two though, I'd go with the BK2.

You might want to look into the Scrapyard SYKCO 511. It would be lighter than the BK-2, and it has much better steel and warranty than the LMF-II.

As others have mentioned, I don't see any advantage carrying a BK-2 for that purpose. Maybe an ESEE 4P CP?

If you're in Special response team, BK2 and LMF II are both heavy and impeding thus unfit for this line of duty.
Then again, we don't know anything of your mentioned above characteristics you base your decision on and much less your main function.
Elaborate on that and you will get more quality replys and suggestions

If you want a suggestion offa me, I'd say the Pohl Force Alpha One/Two/Three.
Helluva versatile, sturdy and most important - Operational with gloves on.

Getting a new knife for an SRT user, I wouldn't get either of those you mentioned.

I'd go with a Swamp Rat Ratmandu (5" blade), or if you can't get that, get an ESEE 4. As someone above wrote, the BK2 excels in outdoor/camping situations, and IMO, the LMF 2 (which I own) is not good for your kind of LEO usage situation. You are not in a survival situation, so that overly thick and heavy blade doesn't make a lot of sense for you.

Actually, now that instructed2 mentions it, I'll second the recommendation of the SYKCO 511.

As mentioned, the BK2 is an excellent camp knife. But for SWAT work, I can't figure out why you'd need that long of a blade. Surely for prying or chopping type uses, your team has better tools in the field. For fixed blade type uses (slicing through materials, rescue, last ditch self defense, etc) something like the ESEE 4 seems better to me. Still plenty of blade, but not as bulky to carry.

Of course, I'm not a LE officer, so my assumptions on your usage may be off.

Let me start off my saying, Thanks to everyone who gave there ideas, I am greatly appreciative for the great ideas. that being said..... what are some of your opinions of the Cold Steel SRK in Carbon V in comparison to the two knives that I had mentioned earlier?

For backup as in "self-defense"? Grab a Glock knife (71 or 81) and call it a day. Featherweight. Good size. Good grip and a "sticker". And, did I mention the price?

I own a Benchmade Nimravus and that's what I'd go with. A feather weight compared to what you listed. Comes with a good sheath (MOLLE compatible) too. It's razor sharp and is intended to be a more of a defensive/back up knife. Personally I love it. Just my .02.

what precisely would you be using it for in a S & R training scenario? Surely you would be going out fully equipped .I would think a cheap small folder would be the go. Then it won't matter if it gets left behind.
What are you searching ?
sorry for the confusion -is this for search and rescue training OR SWAT response?

Take a look at the Becker BK3.... Tac tool....... Very cool knife......... Can be used as an entry tool.... Like a bk2 on steroids.... Love mine
