Ka bar impact ??

Hmmm... interesting. Seems like "traditional" cutlery companies are starting to offer mass produced "tacticals" into their line. Alex, you may want to take a good look at Brownings Mako Pro as well. It is a japanese made fix blade with black finish and G1o scales. Look for Lou Bucellatos/ the Martial Ways post from a few weeks ago in the dealers forum for a pic and good price.

The Spearpoint/Micarta/D2 model looks very good.

A strong competitor to the M2 Nimravious.

I am considering getting one!

Does anyone know the specs? length, sheath, thickness, etc...

Based on Knifecenter, the D2/Micarta one has something on the order of a 4.5 inch blade. Odd thing, though, is they have 1095/plastic version listed with a 3.5 or so inch blade. Don't recall OAL, if I even recalled the above correctly. In any case, easy to find more info at The Knifecenter.

Will the D2 impact be tough enough for harder use? Or is it too thin and hard for that purpose? I don't have any experience with D2 blades yet....

I just got one of these in. Pretty neat knife. Spec's are 4 inch cutting edge, 4.5 overall with a 3/16ths inch spine. The spearpoint tip is tapered back about an inch to the full thickness of the spine.

The Gerber Yari is definitely a more tactical/defensive knife being an overall slimmer profile with a skull crusher butt and a much sharper tip for piercing.

The Ka-Bar has a much more utilitarian appearance offering some belly for slicing and much fuller grip. There is a lot more knife here in both materials and daily usefulness.

Stay Sharp,
Sid

Agree with Sid, GERBER Yari is more aggressive and it has more acute blade. KA-BAR Impact has stronger blade.
I have played with Impact at IWA some weeks ago. The edge philosophy looks quite similar to classic Ka-Bars - pretty narrow grind area, slightly more than half of blade wide is not ground at all. The blade thickness is the same as on full sized D2 Extreme - 4,3 mm. So shorter blade should be noticeably stronger. Micarta handle is pretty comfortable and suitable for heavy use. Cordura sheath with hard plastic insert, somewhat simplified version of new Eagle sheath, completes the package. I have found this knife beefier than I have expected looking onto photos and specifications.

I have picked up smaller version with 97-mm long 1095 carbon steel blade and Zytel scales. The sheath is very similar.

Deciding between Impact and Yari, as usually depending on intended use:
* Get Impact it you need stronger knife for heavy use and/or abuse (probably - prying)
* Get Yari if you need better cutter but be prepared to have weaker blade
Something always costs something
