Ka-Bar Photo Scavenger Hunt

Just so can put this in a Kabar thread. USMC, WWII raindrop camo magpouch, Camillus Army Engineers/Marines knife, Grandpa's issued spoon in WWII.

Let's see Noswad's grandpa's helmet and a Kabar.

Cool stuff, Ulf.

Here's the helmet and the second picture is the WWI helmet with the helmet he used when he was in the Army.

Keeping with the theme, how about a Ka-Bar and something from the war between the states?

There are just so many jokes that can be made here, because so many liberal and conservative states are declaring war against each other over things like guns and drugs coming into their territory from neighboring territories.

I wonder how many folks will have a piece of civil war hardtack to take a picture of.

Well, I have a bayonet from 1862, but it's a French Chassepot. Don't know if France ever supplied any of those rifles and bayonets to the South. I know the South ran cotton and other crops to France and England until the Northern blockade put an end to most of the trade between the South and European countries. If those are acceptable, I can take a pic of that.

I also used to have an old worn out McClelland saddle out in the barn that my great-great grandfather liberated from the Yankees, but my grandmother sold it for $5. I think she sold the old crank telephone hanging on the same wall as the saddle for $3 and the old cast iron wash kettle for $2 to the same jackleg who boüght the saddle. I hate people who take advantage of little old ladies who don't know better. :(:(:(

The bayonet will work, pretty sure France did supply the South with some stuff.

Awesome that your great great grandpa got that saddle, but it sucks that someone took advantage of your grandma to get it. :(

Dad found an old US belt buckle but sold it to some guy because he didn't really want it and he didn't know I would be interested in that stuff. :( I have an old wedding band that we assume a civil war soldier lost, an old button that must have broken off of a uniform, and an old one cent coin from 1840 that a soldier drilled a hole in and wore around his neck.

Makes you really wonder if there was some kind of battle or skirmish on our land. My uncle has found a ton a old rifle balls, money, etc. Doesn't seem like they would have just dropped money, balls, wedding bands...

As it was Noswad approved, here is a shot of a pair of Chassepot Yataghan-style bayonets with a "vintage" Kabar hunting knife.
chassepots and kabar.jpg

The top one is an 1873 model. It's scabbard has a matching serial number. I got it in 1975 for $7.50 (plus tax) at a surplus store in College Station, Tx.

The bottom one is dated 1863. The serial numbers on these do not match. In fact, either the serial number on the bayonet is really low (21), or the bayonet was made sans serial number and the 21 is a storage rack number. Both scabbard and bayonet have the same inspector initial. (L.I.). I picked it up in a Georgetown TX pawn shop for $75 (plus tax) about 6 years ago.

The Kabar is an unknown model (Help Gunsil :D). 5-1/16" BL, 9-1/2" OAL. Aluminum guard, wood pommel with a steel plate on the butt. Post Union Cutlery days as the only stamp is KA-BAR over OLEAN N.Y. on the mark side (Olean line is a much smaller font). From the guard and overall shape, I am assuming that it is a WW2 era civilian/PX hunting knife either based on Kabar's USN MK1 or the civilian version that Kabar used as the basis for the MK1.

Staying with the US military theme, let's see a Kabar with a WW2 Army folding shovel.

No one? I hate that half of my cool stuff is in storage at my folk's place..... Including a handful of WWII folding shovels along with some of my other old militaria.

Hmmm I hope I didn't cause any offence by stepping in over Kenashs request. I'm beginning to think I may have though. Sorry Kenash..

No problem Bro! Back & forth with life keeps one from checking in on other important stuff at times. So, I figured out the avatar pic, and don't remember what the heck I did to do it!! I'll get it sooner or later. I enjoyed going through this thread though. Good stuff!

I'll post a pic of one if no one else does by tomorrow evening and the post a new quest. I sure thought a bunch of folks would have one of these.

dang zzy...when are you opening a museum?? awesome collection of vintages you got, bro.

I was lucky to get these old beauties from an old friend and collector a month or so back. The "pistol grip" one is Union Cut, pre-KA-BAR, the others early models from the mid to late 1920s. For some reason I can only get photos to show using "edit" does anybody know why I have this problem??

Absolutely beautiful, G. Wish I had some friends like that. I love finding OLCUTS and Unions. And yes, for the last 4 months 98% of my pics posts have required going back in and editing out the attachment and reattaching the same pic. Frustrating as hell. I've reported it and gotten zip-diddly back in reply.

The best I've got is a post-Vietnam folding shovel.

Close enough, that'll work so that someone else gets to play.:D

First I gotta build or buy a building - wanna contribute to the future "Z's World of Sharp and Pointy Things"? Donations accepted. :D

Part of the vintage collection comes from being vintage myself. When you buy stuff brand new and keep it, it becomes vintage while being used or even if it's just sitting waiting to be used.

I didn't start accumulating/collecting "older stuff" until 1975, by which I mean WW2 and 1950s stuff. If you wanted to find "vintage" stuff back then, your options were garage sales, estate sales and pawn shops. My searches were sporadically scattered between deployments, overseas assignment and general shipboard duties. Most of my bayonets were found in from surplus stores, pawn shops, gun shows, pawn shops and off craigslist.

I was already buying "current" Kabar and Western knives in the 1970s/1980s and using them just like I'm buying and using current Kabars and Beckers. I'm sure my nephew will be happy when he finds that I have a large quantity of "vintage wanna-bee" 1990s/2000s Kabars, Camilluses (Camilli??), Ontarios, Muelas and Beckers aging with dignity.

Most of my pointy purchases have been funded by "No"s.

Hi zzzyyy, yeah the guy is a good friend, but those five knives there still cost me a couple of Gs. Those "Robin Hood" models (the top three) are super rare, and to find them near mint is really rare, same with the bottom two with the bottom 264 being totally mint. Did not get sheaths with them, but was glad to have them anyways.

wasn't even thinking about this thread over the weekend. Should have taken a picture of our campsite and see who could find my lost BK24.
